Hi Guys

I'm hoping I can be a resource here once I learn some stuff. I'm lacking at the moment and appreciate your time helping me.

I had two 1990 SP's. One was seized up. The other I kept. The gas was used and dirty so I bought a rebuild kit and had a friend clean it. I put it on and started it. It ran perfect. After that I thought I'd do a test in the water. At the lake it wouldn't start. I discovered the take was filthy. So I've flushed the tank, new lines, new filter. What happens is when I press the throttle it starts sputtering and there is alot of blue smoke. During idle it runs rather well for a 20 year old engine. I'm not sure how to check for spark so I connected an inductive timing light to the spark plugs. When I press the throttle about 1/4 of the way, during the sputtering, the timing light stops lighting telling me the spark is quitting.

When I unplug the rev limiter, the spark does not go out, but still runs rough. I've swapped most of the electronics from the other ski before getting rid of it. I haven't touched anything behind the flywheel because I don't have the tools for that.

What I'm wondering is my problem related to the ignition, or is it a fuel problem? I'm not a major mechanic but these motors are pretty simple.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Either could be the problem... unfortunately, you will have to figure out what's wrong. Normally, when you have an electrical problem... it is more like a switch, and it will just shut off. I would be more inclined to think it was fuel related.

Hi Tony

Love your boat. I've been looking at those Seadoo boats. They look extremely fun to ride.

As for my problem, I think it's fuel because it ran great when I first cleaned it. I failed to clean the tank after cleaning the carb because I was so excited to hear it run. With that I would think its fuel, I just can't see why the spark would cut out. I've ohmed out the kill switches, and swapped all the electronics. I'll see if I can post a link to a youtube video tomorrow.

You post ALOT and are really helpful, so thanks
Mike

If you have verified that the spark is gone... then we should probably figure out what's going on there.

I would start by opening the electrical box, and just disconnect, clean, and reconnect everything in there. Sometimes, you get a little corrosion in the contacts.
