Thanks dugout, I will definatley scour the CL in upstate NY. Although I not 100% sure how to import a trailer in Canada. Boats/skis is easy. If anyone has info on importing a trailer into Canada from US could you please chime in. BTW sorry OP if I'm kinda hijackin' yer thread!
Importing into Canada is easy - provided you have the
title to the trailer and the trailer has both the VIN decal and the
decal that advises the tire and load size for this trailer and is readable. I cannot stress that enough...:banghead: Having the
"insurance papers" or "tags" is not enough. If you have the title and a bill of sale and the trailer is decal-ed 100% you are good to go...except for the absolutely stupidest "tax" known to mankind.
Get a load of this - IF the trailer you are importing is 15 years old
or newer - that is to say built from now-Oct 1997
to 2012 you will have to pay a $218 Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) "fee" (TAX!!!!!) and have it "inspected". In BC Canadian
Tire does the inspection (inspection fee is included in the RIV TAX. They basically walk around the trailer and say "Yep that's a trailer"
and sign the paperwork. Canadian Tire also collects the $5 per tire "environmental fee" so if you have a spare on the trailer take it off
before you go in.
But - if the trailer is over 15 years old (from date of manufacture) - the RIV TAX does not apply. Yes you heard that correct. You can bring across the biggest piece of crap and they don't care. It can be rusted out with bald tires and they don't care. They only care about collecting the tax.
SO - if the trailer you find is 1997 or older and it's a good deal or fixable - it's a bonus - otherwise factor in the $218 fee to your purchase price. The RIV application paperwork is also completed by the Border guys.
Any other questions let me know. I've imported a few...hence the rant...
