Gas gauge issue?

Hello I looked under the seat and the gas tank looked about 3/4 full but only showed 2 bars on the gauge. I rode for a little while and my red gas light came on, so i stopped and still had over a 1/2 a tank of gas. What would you suggest I do about this? Is there something I can do other than replace the gauge for $100.00 ? I know I can just make sure it's totally full when I go out but I don't like the uncertainty. Thanks for any input and advice.

That's OK. Everybody that knows would say replace float. Try searching problem first. You get faster answers for your problem.
 
just a quick question. is this that big of job? I will be getting a new float this weekend and was thinking of fixing it before storage. has anybody done it that has shortcuts or tips to make this go smooth. I saw in the service manual they want you to do a fuel pressure test. is this necessary? just looking to see what I'm getting myself into. thanks in advance for any input.
 
Take masking tape and label all the hoses. Even draw a diagram of where they go. With a set land mark like where the wires come out. Your tank may need moved, see manual. Mine I can get to through the glove box. Put Dielectric grease in the connection plug to protect connections. Search how to get clamps loose on hoses. There are a few methods. Be careful, you can snap off a hose nipple real easy. A pressure test after the job is a good idea. ( pop off tester ) Air leaks will drive you nuts! You have no gray fuels lines do you? They need replaced if you do. Use 100% stainless steel hose clamps on the job. A few wraps of electrical tape under clamps is a great idea. Protects hoses and connections.

Not sure what ski you have, but a half hour fix if you can get the baffle out without removing your tank. See you're a fellow cheesehead, where at in WI?
 
Hello, I'm looking into changing out my float and was wondering does the oil tank just rest on top of the gas tank and will it sit there when I slide the tank forward ? I have the install sheet with the new float. Will the tank slide forward enough to get the baffle out? Thanks for any input.

You have to post the year and model of your Ski. Some are different then others. I can tell you how on my 2000 GTI's. But others are another story.
 
It's a 1996 gti and I'm going to get some gas out of the tank first then try to slide the tank forward to get at the baffle .

Are you sure you have to move the tank in a GTI? That is a big ski so you may just be able to leave the tank where it is at and pull the baffle. A GTX is a simple pull.
 
The baffle is back toward the first yellow / seat and that piece I believe doesn't come off.

Randypape, I've got '97, don't know how differrent the hulls are but:

I can pull the glovebox, and get the baffle out thru there without removing anythng else. I have taken the whole fuel tank out thru the front compartment as well, gotta pull the oil tank first.
 
it looks like the tank will pull forward to get at the baffle that's on the other end of the tank. what do I do with the oil tank that sits on top of the gas tank?
 
Guessing it'll have to come out. You may be able to pinch off the hoses and not drain it. You may be able to support it in the hull somehow, and not have to disconnect. I don't know your hull.

Does it have a glovebox?
 
That happen to me. I found that the float is made of some kind of material that start sucking gasoline and doesn't rise up complete. I cut and eliminate that material and I stick with glue a piece of plastic "very light"and now goes up with the level of gas.
 
Okay I'm hoping that when I take the secure strap off the oil tank which goes around the gas tank I'll be able to slide the tank forward enough to get the baffle out while leaving the oil tank where it is and supporting it there. Otherwise I don't think if I leave it where its at and pull the hoses off the baffle I won't be able to get the baffle up far enough to get it out of the tank

No, under the hood is where the storage is and that unit comes out. Then the big seat comes off. The piece of padding in front of the rider doesn't come off and I think it's over a hull piece anyways.
