I bought this ski('97 gtx) at the end of summer rode it for 1/2 hour, week later went to start it,tried to turn over and some clicking, checked relay and all pointed to starter, after replacing the same problem, come to find out when i took the plugs out there was a lot of fuel in there, when i bought it the previous owner told me to be sure you turn the shut off valve closed, now i know why,but what is the correct fix.

need to rebuild those carbs!!!
fuel tanks on skis have vents, but they will hold upto, hmmm, 8-15 psi?
so if you leave fuel valve on, ski sitting in sun, tank builds pressure, pressure pushes fuel thru the weak link, in this case ,past your float needles and seats in your carbs.
this is normaly not a problem, leaving fuel valve on, but on older skis the issuses can happen.
i would rebuild carbs, replace your fuel valve, and check and or replace tank check valve.
why the fuel valve? older skis can suffer from fuel starvation under load because the rubber in the valve degrades and can restrick fuel flow.
trust me just do it! be carefull when you purge fuel from engine, real easy to blow your self up with fuel flying and spark plugs sparking!!!
good luck

Before you go rebuilding the carbs, how is it running? If it runs crisps and starts up quickly without cranking long. I'd just remember to shut off the fuel valve after each use...that's why it has a fuel shut off valve to begin with. Every 2 stroke will force fuel into the carbs if the fuel valve is left on and the fuel while it is seting out in the sun say on the trailer, fuel expands in the fuel tank and forces into the carbs.

Your needles & seats are leaking. Take apart the carbs and replace them.

I'm with chester on this one... the needles are leaking.

also... check the tank vent to make sure its not plugged.
