Fuel Gauge Pegged Out on "E" (2000 XP w/ a couple other questions)

New to the forum, just picked up a 2000 XP w/ trailer for $2200, has 135 psi cold compression (hope thats decent enough for now, esp since it was a cold motor when I did it) only issues noted are seat cover cracked and fuel gauge fully pegged out on "E" w/ gas in the tank (about 1/2 full), wont move at all when ski is running or if its off, is this common and should I check for power @ the gauge 1st. Also I am not getting ANY beeps when I put the lanyard in the slot, where is this located at so i can go to radio shack and get another.

1 more question while im on here, is there any way to get a full service report on whats been done to the ski maint wise since 2000 using the H.I.N. number? Thanks!

135psi compression is the minimum. I would take it for a ride and then check the compression again.

You probably need a new fuel float to make the fuel guage work. There are several threads on this problem. It's an easy fix.

Does the ski start after you put the lanyard on the post? If so you probably only need a new beeper.

You would need to take the ski to a dealer in order to read the memory of the mpem.

135 compression on a 951 at sea level is perfectly healthy. 140 compression is factory.

Compression ratio: 6.1:1

Remove the fuel baffle and replace the float.
Usually the magnet falls out, or the float becomes saturated and sinks. If that doesn't work, there is a couple of threads on how to repair the fuel baffle for a couple of dollars vs. replacing for a couple hundred dollars.

I would download a shop/service manual and perform a full service to the ski including a complete service to the jet pump. Just my 2 cents

I had the baffle go out on my 98 and 02 XP same year. Ordered both because I didn't want to cut up my baffle.... dropped both in, and now the guages work 100%.

you can check that it's not the guage, by shorting it, it should read full when you short it (correct guys?) I think that's how I checked mine to make sure it as the baffle and not the guage.

To fix the inherent problem with all seadoo fuel baffles, a person would need to perform the fix, otherwise the problem will just keep happening over time.
By simply replacing that fusable link on the circuit board with a dab of solder fixes the problem for keeps.
Either way is fine.
I am cheap and would rather spend a little time and almost 0 dollars vs. $250 dollars.

the last baffles lasted 11 years, if I get another 11 i'll be happy... but I agree its a lot of $ to fix...

Do both 'fixes' require opening up the baffle? you know, the thing surround by 15 gallons of gasoline? (roughly the same as 90 sticks of dynamite)....

somehow I feel that if gas got in there, with those electrical looking things, it might result in a bad day on the water...





Has this been corrected on 2009+ models?

Fuel Float

I have had this problem on 2 skis and both times it was only the float. Do yourself a favor and try replacing the float first.

The float requires opening the bottom screen, and the resistor repair requires cutting open the baffle.

Gasoline, indeed does get in there. How do you think the float, floats? Look at the bottom of a fuel baffle. there is no way to prevent gasoline from entering the baffle. It is just a screen :rolleyes:

I don't know about 2009 models

I was being factious; I don’t want to even chance a spark in that area, which is why I personally just replaced the baffles as an assembly… blowing up would be bad…
