I need to have a wear ring and impeller replaced on a 2004 4Tec GTX Supercharged, the place I took it to said it was a 4 hour job, I called around and a couple of other places said it was a 1.5 hour job? Anyone have a good estimate on what is reasonable for this? Don't want to pay an extra 2.5 hours of labor.

Thanks

are you taking the jet pump off for them?

that's most likely the difference...

I got tired of going to the dealer for mine... I got a $60 work bench $10 impeller tool and $40 vice, and now I can do them at home... not to mention I now have a work bench, and vice :)

dealer is $75 ring + $75 labor (or something close) I can do it for $30 ring (over night shipping) and... NOTHING more than some gasket stuff and some gear oil... (may not apply to the 4-stroke)

Investing in tools will always pay you back.

No, but when I called around to a couple of other places I asked what it would cost to replace an impeller and wear ring...all the other places said 1.5 labor, the place it is at said 4 hours....seems like a big discrepency in time. Wouldn't the other places have estimated taking the pump off as well?

depends. I always took my pump off the ski (on mine it's 8 bolts + steering/VTS)... saves them time, and more importantly me money.

could also be 1.5 hrs on the phone, then you show up with the whole ski and they say 'ohh, now it's 4...

working slow it might take 30 to pull the pump, and 30 to put it on (on mine).... 4 stroke looks similar, but with a few more parts.

look around on google

Where do I get an impeller tool? Do local places like autozones carry them or do I need to order it online. Looks like hubby is going to have to learn to do it himself!

4 hours is crazy, Ive called a few dealers too, no dealer or marina said more than 2 hours. I finally settled on a guy that left a marina a couple years ago and took all the customers with him. He has a tiny little shop and about 40 boats waiting to get repaired on his lot. He gave me a price of $150 taxes in.

Im sure i can change it, but ordering parts and impellar tools etc is a pain, so i have no issue paying 150 and wash my hands clean of it. From the phone calls i made, i wouldnt pay over 200 for the fix,

theres always an ex-marina employee that went free lance that will do seadoo repairs for a third of the price that marina asks. Just finding those guys is the key.

Thanks, I thought that was nuts too. I wouldn't mind paying for the 1.5 even two, but 4? I am probably going to pick them up today and take them somewhere else. Unfortunately, the shop there at will probably try to charge me shop time for the estimate, once I add that to the gas to go get them and take them somewhere else and then the 1.5 to fix...probably be paying the same amount. Wish I could find a freelance guy....anyone know a good one in the Dallas area?

1.5 and thats doing it at home in your own driveway with limited knowledge. A dealer should have no problem with that. Save yourself some money and do it for about $100. All you need to know is on this site.

You are saying pick "them" up are you saying 4hrs labor to do 2 skis then thats not bad if it's one ski then that's a rip off I changed mine in like 30min and that was my first time doing it

Pick "them" up refers to that they have both at the shop since it is a double trailer, they are only working on one. I appreciate all the feed back, I am having my son pick them up today. I guess our family project this weekend will be learning to do it ourselves. We are going to have to if we plan on keeping them, I'd rather spend the money on gas and be on the lake then give it to the shop and park them in the garage. I am pretty resourceful and good at following directions...I found a couple of places on this site that explains it pretty thoroughly...wish me luck!

pull the pump from ski, remove impeller and place pump in a freezer for a lil while...lot easier getting the ring out.
