E-10 Fuel killing RPMs?!

Well, i've been all over the internet in the past few months, and found out that MANY of our 947/951 engines have, for no reason, LOST 500-800 RPM from WOT on the water. And since I don't know anyone here personally, share nothing in common. Except 1 thing.

E-10 fuels.

Is this where my last 500 RPM has gone? This E-10 crap?

I found this:

http://pure-gas.org/extensions/map.html

and am going to run my tanks dry as soon as I can, fill to the top with PURE GAS, and see if I get my 7,000 RPMs back... if I do, I know where to fill up from now on.

E-10 is now in more states, and destroying more engines than ever. But I'm not going to dwell on the stupidity of that in this thread. This will be testing if filling up at a 'pure gas' station brings both my ski's back to 7,000 RPM. As now BOTH my 1999 GTX and 2002 XP are running 6,500 RPM wide open. One engine is 1 tank old, the other engine is 1 year old.

it can be difficult to find premium fuel without ethanol anymore, so based on my dealers recomendation, i use sentry fuel treatment:

http://www.sentrytreatments.com/shtml/products.shtml

i started using it in my 4-wheeler too and it has made the throttle more responsive, similar to when i run non-ethanol fuel. the highest non-ethanol i have easy access to is 89 octane, and i can't run that in my ATV (13:1 compression on a built motor).

pure gas

I found a web site that lists stations that sell 'pure gas'... I will run the tanks dry and fill them from here first, and report back. the addative might be easier next time, but this should be a good test...

that is going to be interesting to see how the ethanol blend vs. pure gas changes the performance on your ski. ethanol is a higher octane fuel and is cheap since it is subsidized by the government, so they added it to gas back when it was almost twice what it is now. i wish they would stop blending it and go back to the way it was. oh well, dare to dream, lol.

I live in Mass and cant find non ETH. gas anywhere. The funny thing is my owners manual for my 951 says regular unleaded. It stumbles with reg.

If i put in 93 or Sunoco 94 it goes like a bat out of hell.

regular unleded non-ethanol blended fuel is better than regular ethanol blended fuel. i know some guys that can get away with running two to three points lower of octane by using non-ethanol fuel in their motorcycles. i had been mixing unleaded race fuel with non-ethanol 87 octane for my 4-wheeler for quite a while. that's a pain and has a high cost. the sentry fuel treatment with premium ethanol blended fuel gives me pretty much the same results. i haven't dyno'd it to see if there is a power difference, though.

yea

the manuals for mine say 87 octane min. they do not say a max. I know for the first few years we ran 89, but now i usually use 87. I think I did try 92 last time, but that still contains ethanol...

Looks like the DI models need 91+.

I don't think higher would hurt, so I'll use the the middle of pure gas when I fill up.

If cars get 2-10% worse MPG with E10, it stands to reason that our boats would take a performance hit as well.

I have a genius idea. we will make all gas 10% corn, and reduce everyone's MPG... that will save fuel!!! Gov't is so stupid and short sighted. Ohh, and destroy all pre 2001 engines and fuel tanks...

Whoa... Non-ethanol.... I have some 97 gtx's and i run shell 93 oct in both neither ski runs good at all. Should i be using something else?

using a higher octane than needed will retard the timing and reduce performance. you'll get the most power using the lowest octane fuel. but it will run cooler with higher octanes. the difference in performance from 87 to 91 is not very noticable in most vehicles, but the difference between non-ethanol and ethanol blended fuels is rather noticeable. unfortunately most people don't pay enough attention to be upset about it. less performance, worse gas mileage, yup, ethanol is a winner! it has it's place, but not as a standard fuel for vehicles designed to run on regular unleaded.

Can you list that website? I am curious. Think it makes a difference in vehicles?

BP

I know this is a dirty word for a lot people but I use and will continue to use BP mid grade (89 octane). BP at least in our area uses NO ethanol in all their grades of gas, and BP uses no Arab oil. They use Alaska oil, and oil from the gulf. I also use their gas in my car and jeep.

So I quess I will continue to be politically incorrect.

there's an interesting point that a lot of people who are boycotting BP don't seem to grasp. if everyone boycotts BP, where are they going to get the money to pay for all the damages? a bad thing happened. they didn't cap it soon enough, but our wonderful government didn't step in to do anything either (i think after two weeks they should have stepped in, since BP was and is still only concerned with retaining their rights to that well). now it is up to the government to ensure BP pays for the damages. if nobody buys anything that has to do with them, nobody is going to get a dime from them. simple logic, i know, lol.

So I filled up with 89 octane PURE GAS (big no ethanol signs)... and...

it made no noticable acceleration or top end difference... on either ski.

apparently E-10 isnt the end of the world for my 99 and 02 sea-doos.

Well i was at shell looking at the buttons, and none of them say ethanol or not... How do you find out... They did say something like methanol + 2 or something like that?

Here in KY gas has to be marked "contains ethanol".

Ethanol attracts moisture, unless you keep your ski on the lake it probably doesn't make a lot of difference.
