Downgrade 787 to single carb?

I am thinking of buying a 97 GTX and wondered if the dual carb set up can be downgraded to use the 717 intake & single 40 mm SBN-I. I would trade off 5 H.P. for better fuel economy & the simplicity of a single carb. I read Group K found no real disadvantage to single vs. Dual carbs on the 717. Would a single carb require boring to a true 40mm? Would a single carb pump enough fuel at high RPM?

You can't switch to a single on a 787, to the best of my knowledge you can't put a 717 intake on a 787. A better ski would have been a GTI with the 717. But honestly, I don't find the 787 that much of a gas pig either.

I see no real reason to even attempt this task. The 787 is a finely tuned machine from the factory and works perfectly with stock settings. If you want a longer range do the larger tank swap

Keep the 2 strokes alive!

I own a 97 GTI with a 717 and like the simplicity. My bad cause I thought the rotary valve covers would be interchangeable. I was thinking of buying a 97 GTX and dual carbs are double the trouble and expense. I am cheap and only want to buy one rebuild kit :-). I've read many times how people were unaware of one carb running lean and taking out an engine. I also like the simplicity of the RFI's but the ECM are worth more than the engines.

If you're concerned about one extra rebuild kit............sir you are in the wrong hobby. Dual carbs are a piece of cake.

That discussion can go either way, I've seen too many multi cyl/ multi carb engines bite the dust because one carb leaned out and the other carb/s carried the engine to it death. A very common submission to many inline two stroke outboards with 3 carbs feeding 6 cylinders... in that configuration it can be difficult for the operator to recognize...

....and then there's the added expertise in synchronizing those multi carb intakes,.... not to say that it's a bit deal on a 787,.. but try syncronizing 6 carbs.

Yea definitely a costly hobby, especially the fact that it costs money to go out and enjoy our hobby.. Lol I read a guy on the forum who hasn't taken his ski out ONCE this/last season because of the price of fuel... BUY AN ELECTRIC MOPED!!!!!!!
truck240 , as they said...May not be able to be done from a 787 to 717, but I have seen it done on a 717 dual carb to a single carb. Our forums resident OCD neat freak, ocod has performed this feat

Was just curious if it was possible. My 97 GTI performs great for what it is & I will likely never sell it. It seems to sip gas when I use it to wakeboard. I honestly thought about buying a new Spark to replace the GTI but I can't justify spending that much money on what may be a downgrade in ridability.
