Does anyone know where i can get a choke knob for a 96 gtx?

I am new to this forum and this is my first post. My son recently purchased a 1996 GTX which is in dire need of a choke knob. I have tried the dealers and they want to sell me the whole cable and all just to get the knob. Therefore if anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

As a fair warning, although I have never worked on a SeaDoo I am, I think, about to embark on a fuel line replacement and a carb overhaul. I have spent the last week reading everything I can find out about how to do it but am still a little bit intimated by it. I am going to check compression first and then start my line of not to intelligent questions. I thinnk the rear cylinder is not getting fuel but that is strictly a guess at this time.

The choke knob doesn't come as a separate piece, you need the cable also, PM minnetonka4me for a good used one.

Do a compression test on it. If you think the rear cylinder isnt getting fuel and it was being run you could have damage to that cylinder. I bought two dead 96 GTX skis at a garage sale that both died on the same day with same failure. Both burned holes in the PTO pistons and it was due to the Tempo fuel lines and plugs filters in the PTO carbs.

If it fits I will definitely take it. I will get back to you later on today if that's Ok. I am about to drive 200 miles and will contact you when I arrive at destination.

It was definitely run without fuel. My son fired it up and took off down the lake. After a few minutes he came putting back to the ramp. We loaded the unit and bought it back to where we were staying. I hooked a garden hose to it and fired it up. You could instantly tell that there was something wrong because you could not get any rpm's out of it. Not knowing anything about these units I pulled the back plug boot off and the engine continued to run at same rpm. I shut it down and put my plug tester on it and had great arc through my tester. Therefore I am sure that it was getting fire. Like I said I am about to embark on a project that I am very apprehensive about.

Doing the top ends werent that bad. The biggest problem I had was figuring out the jigsaw puzzle in several boxes. They guy I bought them from had already pulled them all apart, so all the bits and pieces were stuffed in several boxes. Be forewarned, if you do end up having to do a top end on it, be very carefull when you take out the wrist pins. The needle bearings on the pin are not caged and there are something like 32 of them that go flying everywhere. Make sure you have rags or paper towels stuffed down in around the connecting rod to keep anything from falling down in the crankcase.

It is input from folk's like you that makes this forum invaluable to a newby like me. I am going to post a new thread just after I take a compression reading. I hope to gleen from that exactly what the best course of action is. I will be depending heavily on the folks on this forum to guide me forward.

re: choke cable,
had a similar thing happen on a 99 GTX where the knob came off and actually I ordered a new choke assembly (still have it) but my buddy just went to ace hardware and bought a chrome cable knob and re-attached it, somehow, not sure, according to my buddy some knobs do come off, others do NOT.

just a thought, faster and cheaper than waiting for a new assembly to arrive.

From the list that you sent me it looks like it need the following---270000236 70.0 A KNOB 1996-1997 GTX . This is 70 inches long with a knob on the end. I really don't know whether it will work or not. I will PM you when I reach my destination OK!!!

The same knob broke on mine last year. I have the 2 pieces, thought of just cementing them back together and see what happens, if it breaks again then it's a Lowes, Ace Hardware knob type replacement......I would think you need one with a set screw.
 
You can buy a choke knob kit from the dealer. It's not easy to find as it isn't listed in the microfiche. The parts person would have to look for in what's called the "kits" section. The part number is 295 500 439.

I am sure that you have already reached the same conclusion that I have. If you are going to have to replace the knob it will have to have a set screw to fit in the notch on the end of the cable in order to hold it on. The other alternative is to replace the complete cable with the new style from SeaDoo. I am new at this game and am only in it to try to help my son out of a tight spot. I am going to take a look tomorrow to see how difficult it would be to replace the whole assy. I have no experience whatsoever on working on these units. I guess I am not smart enough to not get involved.

Thanks for your input. I have called 2 dealers and they both told me the same thing. I also searched the web for the part and could not find it. I have just arrived back at my home and I will call the local dealer tomorrow and see what kind of response I ger from them.

I went to hardware store and bought a knob that had threads close to the size of the choke cable. threaded the choke cable the same size
as those threads and loctited it on. seems to be working.

I like that idea better than mine. If it fails again I'll do that unless the kit is better. I used Goop marine glue, so far so good! :)

Riding High - What became of the knob kit? Did you buy it, if so then how is it working out? How much for the kit?
 
I know this is an old thread, but I had the same problem and was incredulous that the official "solution" was to buy a whole new cable. I went to the hardware store and found a collar with a set screw. It's not sexy, but it gets the job done! $2.39 was all I spent.

I don't have enough post counts to post a pic, I guess. If/When I do, I'll come back and update this one.

Please don't bring back and old dead thread, start a new one.

Some of us like our skis to be showroom quality but I am glad you found a solution tat worked for you and might help others.
