DESS key

Can any Sea Doo dealership replace a DESS key or is the boat key different than the PWC key.

Any Sea Doo place is likely able to program keys. They have to use BUDS software to do it which is the same software used for boats and PWC's. I did find out recently though that some shops that only deal with PWC cannot communicate with boats. Apparently the software license may be different. My boat sat at a shop for a while without luck until they decided to send it to another shop that deals with boats. That was the issue they explained to me at the other shop that actually fixed it ( had a bad ECM and interface module).

Any DESS key can be used for boat or pwc application. In candoo, you just add the key to the list. Each key has a unique number. Once you put it on the post the on board computer reads the key and checks it's internal list. So I have three keys programmed for the RXT and my Challenger.

It's well worth the 400 bucks to buy candoo as my local seadoo dealer can't handle boats.

Just got a 2007 Challenger 180 SE (4-tec)

Two questions...

So if I buy a Sea Doo DESS key from eBay I can add it to my programming and I'm good to go?

I have not audible chirp when my current key is attached although the boat starts fine. Is this most likely a failed speaker or did someone turn off the chirp in programming...basically I'm asking if the CANDOO can actually do that?

Very interested in buying a CANDOO but not seeing much intel on the internets.

I believe the answer is yes, as well as factory and there is another solution out there. Either way you may be spending $100-400 depending on having a pro or DIY.

The candoo tool is well worth it. Since seadoo abandon the jetboat market, this is really your only way of being "one" with your boat. It's about 400 bucks and your get four licenses

OK kids.

I pulled the dash and saw the buzzer/chirper was disconnected. Never a good sign! It works (chirps twice when DESS it attached) and then continues to chirp 3 times every 5 seconds or so until the boat is started.

Is this expected behavior?

Once the boat is started the 3 chirp goes aways.

Is this just a keys in the ignition reminder?

Well that's a money saver. But makes you wonder why it was disconnected. The manual says you should get 4 chirps every 3 seconds if the key is left on the post while the engine is off. This is normal and to remind you so you don't burn down the battery juice.

Thanks and pretty much what I assumed...and chips every 3 sec is pretty annoying...so I can see why someone may want todo that!

I forgot my DESS at home one spring (5 hours from my Marina & boat) - Fortunately there is a shop nearby that repairs both PWCs & Boats (not a Seadoo dealer) - even had a DESS in stock which he provided complete with programming for $85. I had to haul my boat to his shop so he could program the DESS to match it.
I am not sure if he used the BUDs or Candoo software.
