I wonder if people that show old pictures of nice looking machines think that people will not notice that they are junk now.

Here's my craigslist story of the day. I have a nice two place trailer for sale, guy emails me and says I'll buy it, can I come pick it up. So I call him, he says let me call you back in an hour. 3 hours go buy and I call him, we set a time and place. An hour before we're supposed to meet he's texting me trying to switch the day, no I can't. Then he finally says he "can't find his trailer hitch let's do it tomorrow". OK fine.

Next day (yesterday) we're meeting at 5. I tell him I have to pick my kids up from school so please don't be late. I'm calling/texting him from 4 to 5:30 with no answer. At 5:30 he texts me and says " in stillwater (which for the readers is an hour away) lost a hub assembly in my truck".

No sorry I can't make, no sorry I'm late just - lost a truck a hub. So i'm replying by text asking why didn't you answer my call an hour ago, or text me that you'd be late....... because he can't make or receive calls on his phone. Funny because I just talked to him on said phone yesterday.

So I text him saying I don't believe him and I will not work with him anymore, and he replies "sorry I feel bad can you meet me in Eagan (30 minutes from my house) on Thursday" IDIOT!

I've done a lot of transactions for boats and cars on craigslist without issues but now that I'm getting into PWCs I'm running into a lot more flaky buyers and broken verbal deals. Thanks for letting me rant.

The CL add is back:

"Both ski's are in good condition. Shoreliner Trailer holds both skis-Very little hours last 2 summers. Would like to sell as pair with trailer.
$4000.00 Or Best Offer. Contact Tanya 248)818-5636 The red 98 is a GSX . Cash offers only!!"

But he doesn't even know what he is selling. The red ski is a '97 GSX NOT a '98.

same rants here, set up a time, then no call no show, happens all the time for me, heck, i've backed out on a few deals myself, but i've always given a courtesy call saying, "hey, sorry no deal" its so simple to do.
i've had good luck for the most part except once where I met people 30-40 minutes north of me to help them out and seal the deal, even drove 2.5 hours north once after a guy that looked at my boat and wanted to sleep on it, then called back the next day and said, i'll buy it if you deliver. I was hesitant, but said ok, I was so glad to see his truck in the driveway !
bottom line, CL is not flaky, but people sure are :)

And you are shocked he does not know what he is selling????

People don't care to take the time to do things right. It use to shock me, not any more.

There are some great deals to be had on CL. But most are not even close to accurate it seems.

Thanks. Nick I'm the one with a 97 XP that was at your shop a few weeks ago buying maintenance parts.....and subsequently called back with electrical questions. :D

I'm asking 800. I got a great deal on a Triton Aluminum so I'm selling this steel one.

If this is a venting thread for CL idiots I'm in......

I was selling a 2 place trailer that I used personally for 2+ years until I moved up to a larger 2 place trailer as I
gradually upgraded to bigger (heavier/longer) machines. This trailer was in very good shape - new radials, galvanized,
storage bin, new carpeted platform, led lights, etc etc. In Canada, a double trailer is $1000 all day long. Maybe $850-$900 if it's
a POS, non-galvanized, lights not working etc etc. So in other words this was worth the $1000.....
This clown phones me as was going to buy a new single trailer for $750 but is interested in the double as it's "what I really
need". So he offers me the $750 instead. Politely I decline. End of story? Nope.

He phones back a few days and ups his offer to $900 (as it's half the price of a new double he says). Again I say no. I'll come
down to $1000 (listed at $1100) but that's it. Then it begins....

- the trailer is a 1993 year but super solid etc. He's worried that it's too old.
- he's worried that the trailer may vibrate or may have a twisted frame. No it does not.
- so if he buys new he has a one year warranty and can return it anytime to be repaired. Uh OK.
- I said go spend another $1000 (difference on the new trailer plus tax) and then add on radials, led lights, storage
and carpet the platform and see where you are.
- He say's that's what he's going to do then. (Man I have patience)

Of course it's not over.

Calls me on a Saturday and wants to see it. Price is still $1000, don't come out and waste my time to offer me $900. "OK"...
I grab the trailer (it was stored elsewhere) and meet him.

This guy gives the trailer a better physical than I get at my doctor. Shaking the tires two-three times to check the bearings, standing
and hopping on the trailer up and down, unreels the cranks to measure the strap length, checks the cranks, moves the tongue crank up and down, checks all the lights, the carpet, the tote, takes out a tape measure to measure the dimensions, measures his seadoo (yamaha actually - that should have alerted me) size - twice - hems and haws as I stand there.

Then he starts...."I need this for my stand-up and my 4 stroke machine. The stand-up is 300 lbs and the 4 stroke is 800 lbs. This will work great. It's perfect for what I need". Then he hems and haws a bit more....

"I'm worried that if I buy another 4 stroke the trailer may be a bit small" (Note - it is a "smaller" 2 place trailer)
"Are you buying another 4 stroke?"
"No, I would never do that. I love my stand-up. I'll have it for another 10 years"
"Then why are you worried about that?"
"Well, if I try to sell this trailer and the next guy has two 4 strokes, he won't buy it"
"No he probably wouldn't, but then again a guy has two 4 strokes and invested $10-15-20 grand he's already got a trailer".
"Well I'm worried I may not be able to sell it down the road and then I'd have to convert it into an ATV trailer or utility trailer"
"Let me get this straight. As I understand this, you're worried about having two 4 strokes - which you said will never happen, and
maybe not being able to sell it to a segment of seadooers who have the large 4 stroke machines sometime down the road - which
will be around 10 years from now."
"Yes"
"So you're worried about something that may never happen"
"Yes"
"OK what do you want to do?"
"I want to think about it and let you know" - note this is about 1 friggin' hour after we started this mess.
"OK see you later" and walk to my truck and off I go. I don't know if he expected me to leave so suddenly...I was just happy
to have my life back. :cuss:

The next day I get another call on the trailer, I meet the new guy 2 hours later, he walks around the trailer once then comes over
and hands me the $1000. As we're connecting it to his truck he asks if the lights work (yes) and off he goes. Took about 10 minutes
even after BS'ing a bit.

That night I get a text from the original yahoo saying he was "going to pass". I said no problem I sold the trailer
already anyway. No answer back yet...

Thanks for the vent...I feel better.

On the other hand, I hate to divulge any trade secrets but the things that you are describing that drive you crazy are the tactics that some of us use to get the great deals. Sometimes people get so tired of your BS and stalling they just give in and sell dirt cheap. How do you think I have 4 running skis and 3 trailers for $1500 total. Damn it, I wasn't going to reveal any secrets.

i wouldn't really call those tactics, more like being really inconsiderate and rude, no offense to you personally though

Sorry, just making a joke. I will usually go look at the item and decide if I have to have it or not, if not then I usually call in a few days and see if they will take my lowest offer and keep this up till it sells either to me or somebody else. If you do want it decide what the most you want to pay and stick with that, knowing somebody might come after you and pay more.

I was not implying that you should jerk people arround or be inconsiderate. I was just being a smartass.

haha, my bad to assume, i haven't really had too many terrible experiences, but i pretty much make it a rule if i'm selling, i'm not willing to go out of my way to meet, i've had plenty of people commit and then not show up and not answer the phone.

One of my CL rants is the repeat listers. I have been watching for a larger metal lathe for some time. Every couple days there is a guy re-listing a $600 lathe for $1600. Apparently he doesn't understand he has a $500 lathe. This has been going on since last November. Its making me cookoo. There is a reason nobody is buy the dang thing, & no, its not bad timing.....

Maybe I'll run an add next to his..... Something like this: For sale: (6) one hundred dollar bills, Asking only $1600

LOL I hear ya theres a shop locally here that bumps 10 ads a day for completely overpriced skis. They hide behind "consignment" sale so they can act like they had no idea it wont start, turn over, blown motor, you name it. A few machines literally bumped twice a week for two years. Drives me insane.

Alot of people lie about their "great deal" too. Making their friends think they can get the same deal. Had a guy drive 2 hrs to look at my excellent condition 1996 gsx on a ok trailer. I was asking $2200, he offered me $1100 then shit when I declined. Said he drove all the way blah blah... I said there's an atm at the 711 up the street. He did eventually go get another $500, I said $1600 was bottom dollar.

I just gave you a thumbs up for that post. I tell people the price for things up front. I also tell them if they do not bring the amount we agreed on then do not bother showing up. With the stuff I sell I am upfront with everything and they are not going to find something to drop the price. If they do not bring that, I will send them packing. We are not selling stuff because We need the money. We can sit on them for a while.

I would have said you drove all the way with half the money, then you wasted both of our time. I would have said it is not my problem you live 2 hours from me.

I understand you want to get a good deal but half is insulting at the least.

It's a really a difficult time now days for those of you making a living selling things on the web. When your running a business, & have to make a profit, you have to list items at a fair price, or nobody is going to bother calling you. That being said, that price doesn't always equate to very much profit when you are selling something of quality. So a guy shows up & low balls you, & many times its less than you have invested. Thats not going to work.... Ever!

A person needs to understand, if your buying parts, or a complete ski from a business you might pay a little more, compared to a private party, but your also eliminating a ton of risk. I work in the electronics field, & we deal with that all the time, its not fun. I think some customers think we have little Elves in the shop that make everything we sell & its 95% profit. High profit margins are long gone unless your selling insurance, or medical equipment...
