Cooked crank seals?

Being a 96 with a backfire, I've got to say regulator/rectifier. I know you changed it but I'd unhook the red wire to it if it runs the same way when you get the motor back in.

Removed it entirely way back when this first started with no change :(
Also checked dor AC/DC voltage/ ripple/ freequency while having the problem and it was all clean at the mpem and battery with rhe RR connected.

Your supposed to grease the lip of the seal and I do a little on the crank snout to aid in the install. Molykote 111 is what I use.

Ok, I wasnt sure if adding that was for ease of install or if it it was for to assist in seal break in.

You should add some grease to the lip of all the seals on these. They should not be installed dry. When you first start them there will be no lubrication without the grease. To pull the PTO seal you would have to split the cases.

Like miki said, but it's also in the manual.

HaHaHa, we are men, Manuals? We don't need no stink'n manual. We read it after all else fails.

Just kidding... please follow the manuals as they tell you everything you need to know for a rebuild.

Lol I'm quite familiar with the manual but the theory sometimes isnt there.
Just wanted to be sure there wasn't something that isnt in the manual that you guys learned from experience.

I've never cooked a seal before so I'm second guessing.

If you look at the first page of the engine section with the exploded view of the engine it has callouts showing where to put grease, thread lock and sealant as well as torque specs.

Right, I've been using all of that :)
Not sure if I want to split the case and do the pto seal because it looks great.

Also if I do, I was going to replace the rotary valve seal. How often have you ever seen an issue with that seal ?

Mekanix , what was the outcome on this? did the crank seal fix your issue?

No change :(
What ever it is I'm still chasing it.
Last time out it would surge while on the pilot jet but smooth out when the main kicked in.
