choke won't stay pulled out

Put a brand new set of 951 carbs on. You pull the choke knob out and it just springs back in. Both butterflies have no resistance on them.

On the old carbs, one of the butterflies has some resistance to it and stays in place. I can't figure out how to make it do that on the new one

ideas?

I believe they are designed to behave that way. You should only need full choke for a few seconds, and half choke for just a bit longer.

Others will pipe in if I am wrong...

Yep, I agree SDB hit the nail on the head on this one. There's a return spring that wraps around the shaft of the butterfly choke that make them stay in full open position, betcha the springs were either broken or weak on the old carbs.

Also if you turn the choke clockwise about 60 degrees no matter where it's at it should lock and hold in that position until you twist it back to horizontal.

And I just replaced my choke cable with an SBT that doesn't let you turn the knob because it's square.

Holy crap! An undocumented feature! I just had to run to the garage and try this out, and it works.

Doing that would be too easy. I so much like working the throttle with my knee while I choke it and hit the starter button. It was great training my wife on this!

I just tried it on two of my ski's, it didn't work with either one. Just guessing here but it probably depends on who the choke cable vendor was a time of assembly, it's also probably the reason it's an undocumented feature.

And yeah I agree with the above, it's like SeaDoo expects you to be an contortionist to start your ski.

Hmm... Interesting. I have 2 96 xp's and it works on both. The picture on the dash where the choke is at show the choke handle at about 30 degrees clockwise position. One ski I turn clockwise to ~60 degrees and it holds. The other I have to turn 90 degrees so the handle is vertical but it holds also. It has a detent when you turn it. LouDoo Try going the full 90 degrees with the handle vertical. It will only turn clockwise. Then do the reverse to release it.

If you have the wife trained that's perfect! Don't show her the easy way or she'll never help again.

I made a little gizmo to help with the whole, throttle, choke start button thing. I took an old fuel float and cut it in half and notched out the center to go around the cable when the choke is pulled. holds it in place perfectly and even has a little grab handle to pull it back out easily.

Hey Kicker, they say necessity is the mother of invention, I'm not trying to hi-jack this thread, because I think it's about done. But how's the house coming?

Lou

Well, I just went to the garage and checked the chokes again, and I will have to admit you guys are half right. The 96GTI does have a lock the 96GSX does not.

I am still waiting for the contractor to come up with the final quotes and pricing, then the negotiating begins. So virtually no work has been done yet. Just alot of measuring and structural engineering stuff.

I double checked all mine and none of them will lock, hence the invention.

the old rectangular button ones do it from the 90s but the round button ones don't, at least thats been my experience.
