Causes of a broken RAVE valve?

Uh, I don't know...there shouldn't be pressures in that area that would be able to break one.

I had one melt the threads into the plastic cap, and had to be tossed, but never a broken stem....

Valves

SeaDoo had a problem with the valves breaking off at the stem and came out with a updated valves a few years ago.

Hello all the way from New Zealand :D

I've just pulled apart my 1998 SPX and found that the PTO side valve has broken off. Attached is a photo of the PTO side vs. MAG side. What would cause this?

Rave verse 4 Stroke valve?...

I know that Seadoo had a problem with the exhaust valves of the 1503 engine breaking and have since made a change to help prevent that.

But, the only time I see a break in a rave valve is when someone over sizes the pistons and forgets, that they also have to grind the RAVE.

This is a simple engineering marvel to increase the horsepower of these engines. For one to break, there is normally a reason for it to happen.

But, you can't rule out vibration and hair line fractures in the valve from vibration resonance.

Rave valve

I wasn't refering to the 4TEC valve issue. The 787 had a problem with the RAVE valve breaking off from the stem and falling down into the cylinder. Looking at the picture, I see two grooves that run the length of the valve. This tells me that they are the newer style valves. The picture also tells me that breaking at the stem is not the issue. I'm with you.........piston/valve clearance problem or fracture for reason.

Id bet that even tho they had a problem with the valves, anyone with the old ones would have to pay for the new ones correct?

96 GTX - Stuck Rave valve Caused Burn Score on Piston

Hello,

My dealer replaced the rave valve & said to 'watch' the scored cylinder. How can I do that? what are the chances of a scored piston blowing? Should the piston be replaced BEFORE something blows?

Thanks,

I just pull the same rave valve out of my 1997 challenger 1800. the pto side looks exactly like the one pictured. I can't find the missing part either. It was not in the exhaust manifold, so I pulled the head expecting to find the combustion chamber and top of piston beat up. to my suprise everything looks great! I have no idea where the broken part went. I'll let you know how it goes once I get it back together.

You got lucky and it blew out the exhaust!!

Typically they break from the valve shaft and the housing clearance getting too loose. Usually they leak alot of oil which is your sign its all wore out and needs replacing....and you are on borrowed time.

The valves just went for $50 last year to 93. bastards.

found a broken rave valve on mine as well, seems like its been like that for a while as the part where it was broken was all black and dirty....ski has ran fine since i bought it....whats the chance of that piece (running around somewhere) to cause a problem?

Now i need to buy a new valves!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to becoming 2nd owner :)
At least you got a good deal iirc

sbt part :banghead:

I did, but still want this bad boy to at least not be a ticking time bomb!!!

dont want to take the head off or exhaust off...ski runs fine...just worried about it when i pulled it out to clean them and found a broken part!!!

is the new valves going to break again?

whats sbt part mean? lol...im a newb!

sbt sells aftermarket parts or engine exchange.
You may or not have reman engine.
If its silver it is is.

There were threads where reman sbt 800 engine the valve were dropping causing failures.
If you are getting a new one make sure it has the grooves on the spade part. That is the newer part.

man...so this is an updated part, and its broken...what could be the cause????

Im pretty mad about this! my engine is painted white....

nah don't be.
These things happen. just have to be preventative.

Not sure if reman or not. others with 800 will tell you though

pm Minnetonka4me
he'll have good used prices.
Otherwise try part link at top of site.
Wouldn't go with anything but oem and you'll want to check clearance in the slot.
Some say to shave back guillotine

stepping out on my knowledge with the 787 since mine doesn't have it but usually jug(cylinder head) is off during rebuild to check for clearance.
Usually what catches the rings on the piston after its bored causing broken valve or piston failure.

And I looked at other 787 and they are white? So you should be good on OEM and not reman
