Hello All!

This is my first post. Thanks for having me!

Im new to the whole jet ski world and I just purchased a 1998 GTX limited and SPX. I was told that both need a carb job. WHY? Do they go bad? If I do need a carb rebuild, then how much do they cost(on average) with the parts and labor? Also I was told that I need new fuel lines. Is that true? In addition they both need new wear rings and one needs a new DESS post.

I need a little help because I dont know much about jet skis and it seems like they both need a lot of work done to them. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help and have a great night.

Welcome.

Since these machine's are new to you, it is definitly suggested to have the carb's rebuilt and install all new fuel line. You probably have the old gray fuel line that turns to goo and get's sucked into the carb, this can cause you to run lean and destroy your engine. It's cheap insurance.

Also many would suggest that you drain your oil and gas tanks, clean them out and put all fresh oil and gas. Especially if you don't know how long they might have been sitting and/or you don't know why type of oil the previous owner had in the tank.

Another suggestion is to check all your oil & water lines make sure they are all in good shape, no cracking and make sure to check all the water lines for clogs.

Have you checked the compression on your engine cylinders? If not you probably should do that to make sure your engine is healthy to begin with. If you don't own a compression gauge, you can buy one at any of your local auto parts stores for about $30.

The wear rings are cheap, the DESS post you can get on ebay for cheap. There's tons of information on the net for fixing/working on your ski's and if you are semi mechanically inclined you can probably handle doing most of the work.

As for rebuilding the carbs, I suggest finding a good dealer to do that for you, you need the right tools and know how to do it and that's not something you want to take a chance with.

Typically the carb rebuild kits are about $50. The labor depends on the dealer, but I was quoted about $100 in labor to remove the carb, rebuild it, test it, reinstall it, check settings/functions.

Hope that helps,

Welcome to the seadoo forum. This is a friendly place with lots of active members eager to help out and offer good advise. On a seadoo that old it is likely that the carbs will need to be rebuilt, and fuel lines replaced, as TheChad advised. If your mechanically inclined, it is possible to do all the repairs yourself. We have repair manuals in our Library that should help you also. You have to join to be a "Premium Member" for access, but you also get one on one attention from our moderators if needed. On the seadoo forum we have parts available too. Click on the "parts" link at the top of the page for what you need. If you need advise on how to check the wear ring, or how to do a compression test let us know and we'll post some information. Again welcome and good luck with your new toy.

thanks for the great advise everyone. That was very helpful. If I buy a key dess post on the Net then will my old key work? Or do I have to somehow have it reprogrammed?
Are wear rings difficult to install?

Thanks

The post is just a terminal, your key is programed into the onboard computer. So you should be able to just plug the new post into the harness where the old post unplugs from and connect your exsisting key and should fire right up.

I don't know about the wear ring, I've not installed one yet.
