Broken Rave valve

So now comes the job of fixing an engine with ingested rave valve (oh brother, another project).

The valve went in when the engine was idling so maybe (maybe) the damage is no as bad as if the engine had been running fast.

I will pull the head, clean the debris, and then pull the cylinder and piston to inspect.

How likely is that the connecting rod bearings also got damaged from the sudden stoppage? Should I do a complete teardown of the engine to inspect?

Start on the top end and go from there...Who knows, you might have got lucky...

Thanks Karl, but not very lucky so far. I took the head apart today and the valve jammed underneath or against the side of the the piston making it impossible to remove the cylinder.

The piston at TDC and the top intact. The engine rotates smoothly by hand (that may be a good sign) but when the piston moves down about 1 inch from TDC the piston hits something and stops rotating. the cylinder will not come out. I tried to take the exhaust manifold out but the screws are so tight I am afraid I am going to break the bolts so my plan is to remove the engine front he boat and figure out how to loosen the bolts (maybe heat).

If it is impossible for the valve to end up underneath the piston the other possibility is that the valve is hitting the rings as the piston goes down in which case I may be able to turn the engine a little harder and hopefully get the piston below the valve to remove the cylinder. All I want to do at this point is to be able to take the engine apart to rebuild. This would really turn into a disaster if I couldn't.

Usually with rave valve problems the broken valve should go out the exhaust...but it could cause problems as it wipes out the piston and rod as it gets jammed in the cylinder area. It might be easier to tear the engine out of the boat. Most times the damage is severe enough that it requires a engine replacement, rather than an expensive time consuming rebuild.

Quick question, if a new engine is needed, what are the options? Are new engines available? Are cores available out there?
