Broken pump mount bolt

On '97 GTS, the top-right stud broke flush with the pump when removing the pump mounting nut. Indications are it was rusting through for a long time in a crack. How is best to remove it? Should I get a nut welded on for wrenching out? Can I go from the inside and dig into the bedded-nut? I expect visegrips would slip, and there isn't enough thread to use the 2-oppossing-nut trick. Has anyone had to remove this particular stud before?
I am dead until I get it out.
Thanks, Bojoe

You have a lot of stud showing there, a good set of vice grips might do it. Another trick you might want to try is grinding a flat head line in the end of the stud and then trying to remove with a flat head screwdriver. If you need more than wrist torque, you could use an 18 or 24V cordless with the flat head.

I did it before on an ATV, but I was also able to use a hacksaw to cut the line in the stud. Given the amount of room you have, your only option might be a dremel tool with a very small cutting disc.

Heat and vice grips would easily get it out, but I wouldn't heat that given the amount of fibreglass around.

The only other thing I can think of would be an easy out, but that stud might be hard to drill.

I think you made the best suggestion. You have some thread there, I'd thread a nut on and tack it with a welder.

Thanks Goddo for the quick reply.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try heat with visegrips first. I'm scouting now for a friend that can tack-weld a nut for me here. I have no tags on the trailer, so can't haul it anywhere. Given the original high torque spec for tightening the nuts, I would think it would take at least that much reverse torque to rotate the stud out, and I didn't think a screwdriver w/slot could do it without twisting off the slot.

I've just read an old post about there being nothing to deal with inside the silicon pocket from inside. Does anyone know what the stud is actually threading into? I wonder if I could get in there and use some crud-buster like PB blaster to reduce the force required to visegrip it out?
Thanks,
Bojoe

Happy News! I got it out with an overnight shot of PB blaster and visegrip. Turned on the first pull. No heat. That was amazing. I sure expected the worst, but it turned out so easy.
