I have. If you use a pocket screwdriver to pick up the lower nut while turning the screw it should grab and thread. A little tricky but that's how I have done it.
You can also use a piece of tubing behind the nut to hold it against the battery post. When you need a new battery get a sealed AGM type, not only is the battery far superior but it doesn't have the floating nuts.
