You probably have found out by now, but the 97 has a different MPEM than the 96. MOST 96s have the CDI separate from the MPEM. The 97 have it all integrated. So the 97 is a bunch more money. I say most because my 96 was a late year build and uses the more expensive 97 MPEM.

Yeah that would explain the size differance.
But as far as compatibility, shouldn't most 787 MPEMs work? Just the plugs for gauges would be different I assume

As you have seen, the MPEM from another ski will work. But you need to also add a CDI if you use a 96 MPEM. At least that is my understanding. So if you swap full grey boxes, then you are OK because it has a CDI in there. You cant just swap in a 96 MPEM.

Picked up the junk parts xp today for a decent price, motor is toast I'm pretty sure.

Not as much A/M parts as I hoped for

Factory pipe, flame arresters, the throttle and start holders, and decent condition Hydroturf seat.

Maybe I'll try and experiment with the pipe, not sure yet.

Look like crusty stockers with primer line run and choke plate removed

Since buying the parts xp, I have been thinking about putting the Factory pipe and flame arresters on my ski.
I've been reading and am still undecided.
Is it worth the effort of tuning and jetting?
Will the pipe and flame arresters give a big enough increase of power to justify the extra work/reliability issue?
Or just sell the parts and enjoy the ski stock while it's running good? Maybe a winter project of tuning?
I have not messed with mods yet, but would like to try since I have the chance.
Let me know what you guys think

You can see a significant gain with the pipe, ecwi, prop and the correct jetting. It can really wake a 787 up.

Youve gotta ride a ski that has a factory pipe on it thats tuned properly. For me it wouldn't even be a question. They IMO are the best mod for an older doo hands down.

Yes you should be fine if its jetter propperly. Factory pipe is still in business I'm willing to bet if you contacted them they could tell you exactly how to jet that ski to keep it as reliable as posisble.

That sounds like a plan, I have read many people using all sorts of setups, jetting and different mods so it makes it confusing. Thanks!

Blair, found the complete instruction on FP's website.
They are using A/M flame arresters and choke plate installed. I have the R&D power plenum so I'll just use that and go by their settings.

Sounds like a good wintertime project

Hard to say if it's fresh or not, I don't know the life of it.
Has perfect 150 psi compression. No signs of scoring or extra wear when i pulled raves.

Xp, the gsx is the wife's, even though she likes the xp better :)

Lol next spring after it has the Factory pipe shes realy not gonna like the GSX lol. But yes I agree, it runs now. Enjoy it while the weather is nice, then tear it to pieces when its cold. Good luck!
