Haven't been posting much lately, have a update from my last 96 xp restore

Had a blast on it, but decided I wanted to see if I could sell it and pick up something more stable for the wife and family.

Sold the xp and picked up this pair.

Works out perfect, I get another xp, and she will have the gsx. I was looking around for a double and this Shorelandr trailer is perfect.

Skis are pretty clean, need the usual maintance/fuel lines/carb cleaning.

Compression in all 4 cylinders was a perfect 150

@Minnietonka, will be sending you parts requests soon :)

I saw these on CL, it was a great deal just on his asking price! I had to stop looking at them because I knew I would buy them if I didn't. I would be in the dog house for a while!
Nice score!

Thanks Adam, yeah he dropped it a little, but he knew what he had, the price difference between my xp and these was very small so I'm glad it worked out and most importantly, the wife wasn't too upset :)

Never rode one, looking forward to it!
Yeah I'm hoping the gsx will be a good blend of handling and stability.

ok guys, need your help
GSX is running good

I needed a key programmed for the xp, so i sent it off.
Received key and MPEM today and hooked everything up.

Does absolutely nothing, no beeps, no gauges, lights or anything
Brand new battery, checked grounds, fuses in both boxes.
15 fuse in MPEM was bad, replaced it, no change.

I am bad with electrical troubleshooting, let me know what I need to test, the manual for mpem wiring is vague
Does anyone have a good picture of the grey electronic box so i can double check my wiring?

thanks for the quick reply. no, still in good shape. Good picture, just a bit unfocused.
another question, when programming keys, will it still program to a bad MPEM?
I just wonder if the MPEM is shot, but then again I would think that if its programmable, it should be ok....

I'll go out and take some clearer pictures for you.

I believe you can still program it even if it's bad but not positive. Minnetonka4me will know

Yeah I did message him and he said it is very rare for it to program and not give spark. I'll keep trying, maybe I had something switched around

update, checked rear ebox 15a fuse for continuity, checking good..
Checked MPEM 15a fuse. Nothing

Which wires feed the MPEM power?
Could a bad dess post cause these problems?

Nothing, that's what I find weird, I figured at least something would happen.
I tried my other key and a magnet, nothing works.
What usually causes the 15a fuse on the MPEM to blow?

i fooled with my 1996 XP for almost a year the Mpem the wires was backwards from a guy that tried to fix the computer on and also had a black and yellow wire broke off inside the stater cover

Good point, I'll swap grey boxes with another one I have to rule out the grey plug.
I really hope something is just hooked up wrong

Update
Swapped out complete grey box with one from my friends 97 spx with a bad bottom end.

2 beeps and fired right up!

All things point to a bad MPEM, but I will compare wiring and everything with mine before I do anything.

He's letting me borrow the box and key until I figure out what to do with mine.

I still have hope in mine, would suck to have paid money to program a key to a dead MPEM.

Tonka will probably sell you a good used mpem and maybe you can talk him into programming the key for no charge Minnetonka4me

This is getting interesting....

I opened up the spx box and saw a completely differant setup than the 96.

Not as similar as I thought, so I can't really go off of it.

Will a 1997 gtx MPEM fit the 96 xp? My friend has one that looks like the spx style.

What a great pick up! The GSX is very fun. Like Adam said, it is more stable than the XP, but can still be whipped around.
I'm not very good with electrical either, but I'm very eager to find out the solution to your problem. Best of luck!

Thanks man, hopefully the weather holds up and I can test both skis out this weekend.

I'm sending my MPEM out again, so hopefully I can find a good used one here soon

i might have one from out of my xp here soon, just depends on which direction i go with my build. depends if my buddy gets the software to re flash them or not. i'll let you know in about a week if you're still looking by then or not.

Sounds good, let me know what you decide, I'm using the spx box for now
