Anyone adding oil to fuel in addition to using the pump??

Is anyone adding some extra oil to the fuel even though the stock pump is still working? Thinking about adding 1 oz per gallon just for extra protection on my rebuild even after the initial break in. Thoughts??
 
Different engines handle it differently. With the injected stuff, it can cause issues with the fuel delivery and it decreases the physical amount of fuel the ski actually gets due to dilution. Many have added oil during the break in period and simply change the spark plugs fairly often. Generally speaking adding some oil will not harm things. It will smoke more of course, but that is better than replacing an engine..
 
I'm doing it now, don't have much run time in but as coastiejoe said it's cheap insurance!!

I would on the first tank. Should be good to go after that.
 
Adding a tad of oil isn't going to save your engine if you have an oil pump failure/issue. So I don't see the reason for doing it other than break in
 
I'm in no way endorsing or recommending premix(mikuni oil pumps In seadoos are extremely reliable if maintained) but if your that worried about oil starvation just go 100% premix

I am not worried about the pump failing, just some extra lubrication. Curious on how you are "maintaining" your pump??
 
Checking your pump alignment, checking the functionality of the pump, check cables, making sure oil lines are in good shape not cracking, making sure they are securely on the nipples, changing oil filter???
 
Yea I've actually read somewhere that going heavy on the premix could actually cause a lean condition, because there more oil and less fuel being passed thru at any given time..
Doesn't make sense to me, I figure more lube, the better..
 
If all is factory and running well there is no reason to add oil for insurance. They run well as designed, there should be no reason to add extra, a well looked after 787 is going to give you 300-400 hrs of use. 1 oz per gallon will not give enough protection against any catastrophic lubrication failure so I don't see the point.

Many time these skis blow up because of a lean condition due to a fuel supply problem or air leak, and 1 oz per gallon is not going to make the difference in that case. Its actually amazing how much the fuel itself cools and lubricates these 2 strokes.

If you want to run a long term test to see if the 1oz gets a rotax to 500 hrs that would be interesting.

As far as 1 oz of oil causing a lean condition, I doubt that will happen. It can be dangerous at higher rates (25/1), you hear more if this problem when guys are breaking in snowmobiles at very cold temps. On the older sleds you would have to be very carefull not to run WOT if you had a heavy premix on a cold day.

Got ya... When you made reference that the "pump" is reliable as long it is maintained, I thought you were stating you actually were maintaining internal seals in the pump.
