97 Challenger single engine. Weedless intake grate is broken and just dangling in the water. I need to get it off so I can weld it solid, but I cannot get the 2 screws to move.

Any idea how to get the intake grate off?

I looked inside and didn't see any.
Can anyone suggest a way to jam that intake grate in some way to make it stay up? I can't buy the parts to fix it correctly. None of the parts warehouses have them in stock. (cable with threaded end, and long adjustment nut that attaches to cable and grate).

The last time I looked at it in my parts diagram book, it had 2 screws going up where it is hinged into the hull and a screw on each side of the attachment. The book doesn't show any nuts on the screws so it might just screw into the hull with molly's of some sort. Give it a close look over.

That is correct. But the screws are in there very good. I have been beating it with an impact screwdriver and 3 lb sledgehammer, and it isn't even budging. I will end up stripping the screws or beating a hole in the bottom of the boat if I keep at this.
I don't want to weld on it while it is attached, either, so now I am exploring ways to jam that hinge somehow.

Try using a small propane torch like for sweating copper pipe. Heat the surrounding area carefully and see if it breaks the screws corrosion loose. Keep a bucket of water handy just in case...it gets too hot.

I took a butane "pencil torch" but got to the garage where I store it and it was empty...
I hope it is just locktite holding it in, cuz I really need to get it out and weld it solid.
Or find aftermarket grate, but that has been a deadend search, so far.

Be careful of the fiberglass. It is possible that the corrosion or lock-tite is causing it to be a pain.

Since I cannot get it off, I think I will look in to removing the cable from the hull, and running a stainless cable from the grate up through the hull and anchoring it there.

That might work, but be sure you can silicone it so it won't allow water to back flow up the cable.
