Another starter question?

I have a 1999 GTX RFI and sounds like the starter is going (my guess). When I start it on the trailer the starter is intermittent (usually starts after 2-3 pushes), it starts to engage then the bendix disengages from the flywheel. If you hit the button as soon as the bendix disengages the starter just free spins. Now when I put it into the water it'll start once or twice then after that the starter keeps doing the intermittent/disengaging routine. When I first got it (2 months ago) it only did this once in a while, now it does it every time I start it. Battery is new and I keep it on a battery tender, charging system is good 13.3-13.6 volts running. The start solenoid is new and all the battery terminals are clean. I jumped the two battery posts on the start solenoid and it does the same thing. I think it's the brushes or clutch, any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just ordered a new one, plan on rebuilding the old one for a spare. How much of a pain is it going to be to get it out of a GTX RFI? Any tips?

Thanks

I just went out and looked at the starter, what will be the easiest way to get it out. It looks like the air box and maybe the exhaust will have to come out?

Ordered new starter, got the old one out, didn't realize at first that the starter was threaded and the allen bolts held the starter in place. The old starter's brushes were toast, can't wait to put the new one in and go riding. Thanks for everyone's input. Will let you know when it's all done.

The starter fixed the problem, took it to the ramp, put it in the water, started it about 10 times. Rode it around, brought it back started/ stopped 4-5 times and repeated this a few times and SBT starter worked great. When I took out the old starter, the brushes were worn pretty good. I think it was the original starter which was 11 years old. Thanks for everyone's help.

Put a set of brushes in it and have a good spare if the day ever comes. Yea...Clean it up, load test it, Bag it! An old Mans advice.
