Another 2 stroke oil question?? Sorry I tried to search

My GTX had almost a full tank of oil in it when I bought it. Now its getting kinda low. The tank is stained almost a purple color. Every seadoo oil I have looked at is not that color. Now...... I do have a left over Gallon of Seadoo 2 stroke mineral oil (it was used in the 951 motor). Is that safe to put in there. Also what oil is a purple color? I dont want to waste a full gallon of this mineral oil I have...and is the mineral oil better then synthetic? Thank in advance for any help on this one. :cheers:

The synthetic oil would be the better oil for your machine as long as you were comparing apple to apples, or in this case, API-TC to API-TC. The benefit with mineral oil is that it still may provide you with adequate lubrication at a cheaper price than full synthetic.

The general rule of thumb regarding mixing oils is "DO NOT", especially when you are unsure of one of the two oils in question. I was in a similar situation myself with my GSX Limited as I was not 100% sure of the previous oil in use.

I personally would clean the old stuff out.

BUT... if you wanted to be semi-lazy about it. I would at least extract all of the old oil I could from the tank. Try test mixing it with the oil you intend to replace it with. After a few days, if it does not gel or get "funky", you may be ok to leave whats left of the old oil in the lines and tiny bit that I am sure remains in the tank. Then go out for a long ride afterwards.

If it doesn't mix well...then you should drain the oil lines and change the filter too. Draining the lines will help get all of the oil out of the tank as well.

I wouldn't chance it. Drain out the old, clean it... and replace.

FYI... the synthetic Polaris oil is purple... but it's a TC-w3 oil. (not good for Seadoo)

Yeah its def a blueish purplish color... I think I will try the QuickSilver PWC stuff next...its soo much cheaper then the Seadoo Stuff. I hate to waste this gallon of mineral oil though.

+1, Mystik JT-4 is purple.

However I have not seen Mystik stain the tank purple..

Many of the TC-W3 oil's are a dark blue color, I can see that looking like purple on the tank..


That said, you ran mineral oil on a 951? That's a HUGE no-no.

I definitly would NOT run mineral oil in your new GTX.

You need to run a full synthetic API-TC rated oil.

XPS Full Synthetic (~$45-55/GAL)
AMSOIL Interceptor (~$35-40/GAL)
Quicksilver PWC Full Synthetic (~$35-$40/GAL)
Mystik JT-4 (~$20-$30/GAL)

All of those oils have the proper rating for your engine. They are all the same quality/specs as BRP's XPS full synthetic oil.

So, you thinking of leaving the previous oil in and mixing in with the Quicksilver?

If it was the same shade of purple/blue and felt the same rubbing it in hand, I probably would feel comfortable mixing it. Just gotta extract a little from the tank to give it a look.

But, don't you know the guy you got the ski off of? Can't you ask him what he used?

Trying to save a few $$$ worth of oil, isn't worth the price of a new engine. Drain, clean, refill.

Using the wrong oil is bad enough... but mixing oils is even a bigger no-no.

I just filled it up with Quick Silver full synthetic...thats the only one I found that is the same color. Now off to the beach I go. I will get some pics today.
