I have a ramp so does AdamA96XP I think. I normally pull mine out at night

Ahhhh werd! Yeah there's a private ramp in his neighborhood less than a minute away, but not at his house.

Growing up at the beach, even when my parents had a private ramp and dock in their neighborhood, I had never experienced a lift. It's amazing walking out the back door and at the push of a button being in the water in 30 seconds.

So it runs fantastic but It was time to dial it in. I've run a few tanks of fuel through it with this Coffman's pipe setup but I just knew to not hold it WOT for long. Yesterday evening I set out to see where it was really at and what the ski will really do now. With the T- tank down to 1/4 full I could get the revs and the speed up.

Unfortunately I could not keep the temps under control. My exhaust temps went over 1100 no matter how much I opened up the high speed jets. I had the timing at +1 so I tried -2 and -3 deg and it just ran a little worse but just as hot.

My next step is to swap the head. This one has only 41cc domes and common knowledge is that 43cc is the minimum for pump gas. Hopefully backing off in this area will allow my to use these race parts for rec. In my opinion a boat that can't run WOT safely till it's tank is empty is a broken boat. If backing off the compression does not do it I'll sell the pipe and carbs to the racers and try something else.

I fight cavitation in this ski. I've even pulled the ride plate and resealed it. It ticks me off. It's not bad but still, it's just not perfect out of the hole like it should be. I'll keep working these things out and hopefully will report back with some good news soon.

I have the older style seal/carrier bearing. It's an aftermarket and a couple years old now so I will try a new one. I went through everything a year or so ago and had the problem pinned down pretty good. Something was getting worse and worse as I was making those test runs and I didn't see any weeds in it when I pulled the ski out. I plan to get to it toward the end of the week.

Well I had to start backing off so I swapped the 41cc dome head out for this Westcoast head with 44cc domes. It runs almost as well and about 50 degrees cooler but I still can't hold it under 1100 degrees when WOT despite timing adjustments and opening high speed needles. It was going past 60 on the GPS speedo and my revs were almost 7400.

Now I'm gonna try a different pump with a taller impeller (Solas XO rebuilt and pitched to a X2) to try to knock those revs down without costing me speed. I am going to try this ported brass pump. Today was raining so hopefully tomorrow.

Are you checking piston wash and plug color too? I start to worry on mine at about 1050-1100 but my probes are at least an inch if not more farther out on the manifold.

No when I think I'm there I'll check them out. I have been timed too far off before and saw my electrodes trying to turn white.

Try out that unidentifiable Picasso style impeller I talked you into buying from me :)

Maybe that's the needle in the haystack !

I think tonka has a good point tho, the piston tells the story along with the numbers,

Yeah you cant rely on any one tuning method but we all get lazy. Esp me. But I think you are being too safe in this instance. Check out where mine is located. When racing with the original 787 and this pipe/egt that was in there I was seeing about 1050 on the back straights.

Here is the wash with the old setup I sold from the ski. That is about perfect I think. Now I have to get back there but I will.

I went out today but it was choppy as heck. The boat felt great but I couldn't hold anything over 6k without feeling like I was gonna throw myself off. Unfortunately I don't have much to report other then "I tried and shouldn't have" haha.

OK I was not feeling cavitation with the ported brass impeller and the new seal/carrier. The taller prop only let the boat run up to 7k and the temps still ran 1130 degrees. I lost some bottom end and it was slower on top as well. The plan is to put the prop I was using in the brass pump now. This should give me the best all around performance although it's still likely to run a little hotter at WOT then I like. Anyway, it's plenty close enough to being right to bring out to our fall ride and let everyone enjoy.

I have a grey box with a MSD Enhanser in it that I can try also. That ignition box allows the tuner to leave the initial timing a little advanced while pulling the timing back at WOT. That may be the ticket for me, not sure if I'll have the chance to try before the ride.

Update time. At this point I'm looking to take one of my other race hulls and put it into this ski's position in the fleet. There is nothing wrong with it I'm just ready to keep moving on. It's like a car you've had forever that just gets boring in your eyes. I've built the ski many different modified ways but this will be the last assembly.

Since I'm faced with selling it I've been thinking of the best way to go. I've seen skis like this sell in the $2500 range but the darn things take 4 grand to build lol. So what I've decided is to keep the look and the handling but build it using stock parts where possible. I've already pulled the ski down and gave her a good pressure washing.

At one time all the decals on the outside actually represented what was within. At this point she has given most of those things back to me like: Racepak egt system, TTO tach, high rise Jettrim seat, Skat Magnum pump, Baker trim, nozzles, ported cases, T-tank with straps and plumbing, etc. I'd still like to get at least 2K with a good trailer under it, especially if I leave the UMI on it.

So lets see how I do. I'll take some more pics as I go along from here. It's been a bit of a rough start. I built a good used 787 up a couple weeks ago on cases an old racer gave me that he didn't remember the story on. I thought I was about ready for paint but when I torqued the head down it wouldn't roll all the way over anymore. Turns out the cases had been shaved for a stroker motor project or something so I had to rip it down and build it all over again.

I've seen some engines painted in a "crinkle" paint that I liked the look of. Kingsspeedshop uses a truck bed-liner from Lowes. Well I had some "stone" paint that had been sitting around for years so I thought I'd give it a go. Turns out my stuff was much too coarse so it looks like corrosion. I've been splashing paint on it now for a couple days as I pass by just to try and get a little further away from that "Pinterest fail" look haha.

Today I had a chance to move forward a little. I pulled the Westside Powersports all silicone rear exhaust hose off it and replaced it with a stock one. The cable trim stays unless/until I pull the UMI.

I got a little plumbing done. I'm going pre-mix so I'm using this motorcycle brake fluid reservoir for the tank that supplies the rotary valve chamber. It should not consume much but it's nice to be able to monitor the level at a glance and top off when necessary.

Setting a stock tank back in....

The paint work is starting to come out a little better. I left the texture coat out of the equation this time.

Lookin' good! What crank are you using in there? Ever since I ate two a couple years ago, I'm wary or rebuit ones using WSM parts. Had one of their rods snap in half and window the block in 2 places. I'm actually planning on moving to FL, so I'm going to sell off all my jet skis except the old 95XP derelict. Going to put all my fun parts on there: Factory Pipe, Novi built carbs, MSD ignition, water injection, skat trac 17/21 prop and extended pump, maybe do some porting... All that would require a good, solid crank. I know new OEM is the way to go, but where can a guy find one these days?
