Alarm from the cockpit when I install the batteries?

Just picked up a 94 Speedster last weekend. The batteries were dead so I got two new ones and went to install them today. I hooked up both the negative connections first, then as soon as I touch the shorter red wired to either battery I get an alarm from the cokpit area? The key is out, fan, horn and everything off?

Any ideas what the alarm means? I can't finish installing the batteries because the of the alarm issue.

Thanks

It's a constant beep as soon as I connect the battery. The key is off and not even in the switch. I turned the key and tried to turn over each engine and the left will turn over but the right doesnt try. I would assume I have 2 temp sensors, one at each engine? Would a bad temp sensor prevent the engine from turning over as well?

Thanks

on a 94... I don't think it would.

Try this....

On top of the engine, you will see a single wire, hooked to the temp sender. Just pull the wire off (one engine at a time) and see if the beeper turns off. The sender grounds that wire when it's hot.

Thanks I'll try that and see where it leads me. Would the temp sensors be active even when the key is off?

Or could the alarm have something to do with the batteries or something not being grounded properly?

On a 94... you don't have an MPEM... so they may be hot all the time, but if your key is off... you shouldn't get the beeping.

Found the problem, the gray case that houses the electricals had water filling half the case, now I just need to dry things out check all the fuses and see if anything is fried. Not sure if this means the previous owner sunk the boat at some point or got too aggresive with the pressure washer. No signs elsewhere the boat sank but finding water in the electric box can't be good.
