99 Speedster project :D

Motor is back in. All that is left is plugs and cooling hoses and I can fire it up! Mosquitoes were getting bad and I was whooped from a whole day crammed in that engine bay, so I called it quits for the night. Needed all the welsh plugs replaced on the pipes, so we did that yesterday... After being crammed in that stupid thing all day, I am seriously considering selling it- that thing SUCKS to work on!!!!!! I will scuttle it before I cram my ass back there to do another motor job lol.

sell it?!?!?!?! wanta trade for some skiis?

sell it?!?!?!?! wanta trade for some skiis?
Lol, I would but can't right now. I don't need any more skis and if I did get rid of this, I would also sell my 08 Speedster and use the money from both for something else :).

I don't think I will be selling it. I am just far from the most patient person and I was about to Hulk out working in that crammed bay lol. Getting jabbed in the shoulder or head on the hatch any time I'd stand up, cramps in my legs and back trying to crunch up into a damn ball to work on it, dropping tools, bolts, whatever under the motor after spending 10 minutes contorting myself into position and having to unfold and get back out to reach them, etc.. Holy crap, I swear, if I could have turned into a green rage monster and smash the thing to oblivion, I would have about ten times over today. It got to the point where it was well past cursing and turning into psychotic laughter lmao.

That thing was designed by the devil himself :reddevil:

It doesn't help that I am trying to get this done, my 08 back together, the brakes, spindles and axles swapped out on my Mustang, clean the garage, wash the cars and got some stuff situated around the house before the baby is born- he's coming Wednesday!! I also have two cars lined up to paint for people- one is already here, the other one will be here soon. Not to mention the stress/anxiety over the baby. I have entirely too much on my plate at the moment and it's getting the best of me :(.

Um, the devil himself was working on it!:D Six 6mm hex heads and two clips on the hatch struts. BOOM, hood is off and it's a one man job. Trace around it with pencil and the re-alignment is easy breezy! Well, you need to have a large wing span, I have a 6'2" wingspan. I wedge towels under the hatch when its open, disconnect one strut, pop the clip on the other and have all but one screw out. Now you can even use an engine hoist to ease the install and removal. I couldn't imagine doing that job with the hatch on--you sir are friggin' delusional! I did the first one by hand and dropped MY nutz doing it. Now I have a hoist in my shop I don't lift shiz any more, 1100# lift mounted on a trolley to shift left and right. Don't give up it will be worth it. Good luck with the new Kiddo!

damn kwiktsi, u get a lot of stuff done in a day, all I did today was wire some running lights to my dome light, so when I unlock my car it lights up the floor like puddle lights. basically took me 5 hrs, but it's looking sexy, and those who come to the jan meet can see it :)

I'm feeling Kwickskis pain(yes I misspelled his name on purpose). I fixed my twin 717 speedster with the hood on too. I punished myself double cause I built a 717 up on a bad used crank(and just know admitted it) and it didn't fly. I could just hear bearing noise compared to the other engine so I yanked a good used 717 out of a ski and stuck it in there. Your "in a ball" description is right on! Next time I'll go tripleX's way (lol).

Thanks Racer! If you haven't noticed by now- I'm stubborn lol. I did this motor by hand too without a hoist... Didn't feel like driving to my shop 20 minutes away to grab the hoist. I would loved to have removed the hatch, but it was just me and I do't quite have the span you do lol. Wife offered to help with it today but with her being pregnant and all, I didn't want to risk her getting hurt as I wasn't sure how heavy it was. I did undo the struts and used a ratchet strap to hold it open a bit further, but that only bought me a few inches. Still better than nothing though!

I'll have to keep that in mind for next time, it seems like it would make things MUCH easier!

Haha- I'm not that motivated, I didn't get all that done, it's just stuff I WANT to get done before 5am weds when we head to the hospital for her induction lol. All I got done was finish assembling the motor and installing it and the pipe back on the other motor. I think I spent more time trying to find angles and positions to get to stuff than I did actually getting anything accomplished :(.

It's brutal, isn't it??? Holy hell did that suck! At least the worst of it is behind and it will be running tomorrow. *Might* try to take it out tomorrow if we can, but slim chance we'll have the time to :(.

Edit- wanted to add this pic. This is my friends way of leaving personal messages and signing the work he does for me lmao..

Yeah, he pointed to the pipe and said "oh, I added a personal touch for you" I was very surprised to find it was on the bottom lol. He's not the type to hide things haha.

lmao at the weld message,,, i'm going to steal that idea sir !

and I feel your pain working in the engine bay there, its just awful. When I first took my challenger out for a test run, we had smoke in the hull and we were convinced it was on the pipe so we pulled it right there in the parking lot, lined it up again, so i'm the guy bending over the back of the bay cracking my ribs trying to hold the pipe in place while my buddy is cranking down the stupid clamp which has a million threads in it.

at that moment I decided to sell the boat as soon as it was running right, right there :)

And of course none of my deep sockets are deep enough for that damn clamp... I used a gear wrench which helped a lot, no way would I want to do it with a regular wrench! That was me working on it yesterday- "I'm gonna sell this %*#(@# piece of $#!% when it's done"!

You guys whine too much...lol although I havent had to do any motor work in a dual motor boat...just a single.

Taking the hatch off is a MUST...for almost every job. I then prop up the trailer so the back of the boat is low and get a step stool.

Theres so much more room to reach things....and if you have a hoist you can assemble almost everything BEFORE you drop it in. Carbs, exhaust, etc. then drop it in.

If you want it moved... let me know.
Thanks for the offer, Tony. Just gonna leave it here for now since this is my new hang out spot lol.

My 08 Speedster is cramped but is cake to work on compared to this! At least there are places to put your feet in the 08! This thing, between the cable brackets for the grates, the water valves on the exhaust, hoses, carbon seals and boots, various other brackets and wires, etc. it's like playing twister in there!! Then, just when you think you've found a comfortable spot to sit down, you get a temp sensor up your ass lmao.

Yeah, would have been much easier with the hatch off and a hoist. Was a real bear assembling it all in the boat!

I then prop up the trailer so the back of the boat is low and get a step stool.

Should do that vs. my jumping in and out of the back the whole time lol. One time working on my 08, I jumped out and the cleat caught the leg of my shorts. My shorts ripped just before it would have been too late to save myself from face planting on the concrete floor, but not until after they dug around the entire inside, front and back of my thigh. HUGE bruise and it turned every color of the rainbow! This was a couple months ago now and it is still tender to the touch lol.

i hear ya, at least the single engine's you can find a home for your feet, with the twins,,, its dam near impossible...

and I took my hatch off about 3 hours after poor kcr357 almost had 4 fingers snapped off when it slammed down on his hand, fortunately, very fortunately, he had his hand out to the knuckles, so it was only a bleeder, and he's a tuff guy so he took it like a man, but i'm guessing he was hurting for a few days.

ouch. How'd it slam down? Bad struts?

yes, struts were bad i had it propped up with a 2x4... and of course it got bumped and SLAM !!! and that dam hatch is friggen heavy....

That's nothing. To get the engine out of the islandia... you have to remove the struts... and then the hinges allow the deck lid to go vertical. (that was nice of them) And... it kind of rests on the drive's seat. But when I was working on mine... that lid came down on my back, as I was half way in. I bet it's +250 Lbs. (it has ducting, and the entire rear seat bolted to it) I was dumb. a simple bungee strap would have kept it up.

I crawled out, and took a hand full of pain killers. (I have a bad back already)

But... I agree... the twins aren't easy to get comfortable with. Removing the deck lid makes life easy... but you need a hoist to remove it without damage.

Damn Doc, that is a jumbo hatch and not something I'd want coming down on me. The worst thing to get use to on the Speedster is hanging upside down. I have a little cushion around my mid section (gut) so that takes the brunt of it. And once you pass out and can get past the blood circulation from hanging upside down it's not too bad. The hoist is clutch though in these engine jobs, I'll never do it again without one other than that I actually think it's roomy in there to work, but I don't stand in there, my long arms can reach pretty far. Just don't work off a 5 gallon bucket flipped upside down, or your gonna slam your bucket--talking from experience when it slipped out from under me!

The hoist that one?
http://www.harborfreight.com/110-volt-440-lb-capacity-electric-hoist-with-remote-control-40765.html

or the 1100 or 800lb capacity one?

I have the 1100# one http://www.harborfreight.com/1100-lb-capacity-electric-hoist-93251.html

and also the #880 http://www.harborfreight.com/880-lb-electric-hoist-44006.html

I bought the 880 just cause it was too good of a deal to pass on, still new in the box.

I think I paid $89 for the 1100# on sale with a coupon and $69 for the 880# the same way

The 1100# I bought to lift my kids Moon Bounce--not the pansy moon bounce either it's a full blow rental moon bounce 200#. The 1100# hoist doesn't bat an eye at it. I lift it up the slide it effortlessly on to my mezzanine. I used a roller door track for the left to right movement. I don't think I'd throw a small block ford at it, the moon bounce will be the biggest thing it lifts.

Sorry Kwik to dirty the thread with my pics
