99 Speedster project :D

As many know, I just picked up a 99 Speedster yesterday. It needs interior work, work on one motor and a serious cleaning! I spent some time checking it out today and it needs a top end, no biggie. It had a plugged water fitting, so it overheated. I'll be going through all the carbs as well to make sure they're good to go too.

Figured I'd just post pics as I go. The engine bay was NASTY- black and moldy as hell from sitting! Yuk.. I gave it a quick spray down with Super Clean and hosed it out- MUCH better but still needs some more detailing done.

And yet some more... I'll update as I get the motor torn down and more pics of the boat. The interior is pretty ugly but the hull is very nice overall!

It always amazes me how dirty the boats bilges get....yuck.

If I owned one it would have two versa plugs in the back so it can always let water out.

And...seeing how bad the bad motor is...it might be a good idea to thoroughly check the "good" motor. I'd pull it and check it.
 
subbed for this one, joe, what did you use to clean the inside the engine compartment, the difference is night and day

I was looking at those versa plugs, just didn't know how reliable they were. I have used similar check valve setups on rc boats and sunk them due to them sticking and leaking lol.

I don't know that I am going to pull the good motor yet- my back is not happy working in there! I am certainly going to thoroughly check it all out though. I don't know if this one went due to the overheat or a lean condition, but all possibilities will be addressed on both motors :D. Also plan on draining the unknown oil out of the tank and cleaning all that as well.

Yeah, I can't believe how well it worked! I used Castrol Super Clean on it. Not even pressure washed or scrubbed- just sprayed it on, let it sit a couple minutes and hosed it off. I expected to at least have to scrub it in spots, but nope :). I used to use the cheapie "purple" cleaner knock offs, but they don't hold a candle to the Super Clean! I used Advance Autos "Purple Power" when I pulled my GSX apart and it barely put a dent in the grime, went over it with the Super Clean and it cut right through it all!

Bilge looks good, gives me hope for next spring when I tackle cleaning the motor compartment of my Challenger.

holy christ! I guess the super clean is worth the extra $$. I've been using simple green and jungle jake at around $7 a gal and it takes a couple rounds with the high pressure sprayer to get that clean.

Yes..with all one way valves there is always the possibility of issues. Mainly...if a ziptie or hardware got jammed in there.

I used to use nothing but super clean, but started using the other stuff to save a few bucks. I noticed at the time that on tough stuff, it wasn't as good as the super clean, but for the majority of the stuff I used it on, it sufficed. It wasn't until cleaning my ski hull that I realized just how much weaker the other crap is!

I'll have to look into that valve, if it keeps the water out, it's worth it! Even my 08 150 always has some grime from water sitting in it that never fully drains.
 
HOLY SHIZNIT that looked like a grenade went off in there!!!!!!!!!

That plugged water port is what gave you that "gold kit" on the head pipe. And them opening the thing up probably is why it hydro'd I'd guess. She looks MINT inside now.

The Rule pump in the bilge will do you good. There is a ball valve on the back but it's only for the deck drain IIRC. I've never needed anymore then what is there. The Rule is an auto as long as the power switch under the hood is on. Be careful mine sticks from time to time, I always check when we stop.

I used the Super clean on my XP resto and it was effortless. Keep those pics coming. Open the Ski locker, bet she's oily and moldy too. There is a 1/2" drain hole in the back that you'll need to clear for it to drain I'm sure.

Huge turnaround on the engine compartment, Joe!!! Super Clean really earns it name. It will be fun to watch this really take shape. Make sure to get some good photos of the Bimini top!

Yeah, that plugged port is what cooked the exhaust but it still has a melted pto piston. I don't know if that is from the over heat or if the carb is plugged. Either way, I'll be addressing both :D.

Haha, funny you mention the ski locker- I think there are some new life forms evolving in there! Gonna have to buy some more super clean before I tackle that and the rest of the boat! As for the bilge drain, I know the pump works for the big stuff, but I know my 150 holds water in various spots no matter what you do to drain it and that starts to get moldy :(. The check ball setup we are talking about goes in place of the plug and allows water to constantly drain while in use. I have used them in my RC boats and they work great at keeping the hulls clean and dry- or they sink them lol.

same experience with my boat, impossible to get it all out... the only way to keep it totally dry was to wet vac it out (while cracking ribs hanging over the engine bay) then leave it open for a little bit to air dry. i think i threw a couple of the bilge cleaner tables in there once and i guess it worked, smelled a little better in there after a couple uses, but honestly the ONLY way to keep it really dry is just to wet vac it when you get home.
 
holy smokes that came out clean. All it really took was spray on, rinse off??? I was about to pull my engine and everything from my ski a few weeks ago just to clean the grimy interior, but now you may have just saved me a big headache...it doesnt have to be perfect, but jeez yours looks really clean if you did what you really said. No powerwasher or nothing???

you don't need to pull the engine IMO... i've cleaned many bay's to an acceptable level with a squirty bottle full of super clean (and a gallon backup) and a small 1500 pressure washer, or even the ones at the car wash. i've never just rinsed it off, just cover your flame arrestors if you have them with a baggie, and start squirting !

Sand and corrosion. Which is odd, because everything about this boat is extremely clean and corrosion free- hardware, cables, nozzles, etc. I figured it was a freshwater boat, but after seeing this, I'm thinking they were really good about hosing down the boat but just bad about flushing the motors...

Yup, spray on, hose off- BUT mine was mostly mold. Tough stuff will need some scrubbing, but still pretty effortless. My GSX only took scrubbing where there was a lot of oil or grease build up..

Speaking of the GSX, here are before and afters of that one too :D. Keep in mind, the "before" pic was AFTER already giving it a quick cleaning with another cleaner to get the "big" stuff off- yuk!!! Ignore the huge oil puddle in the hull, I knocked the crimper off an oil hose when pulling the motor out..

Well, figured I'd update a bit, motor has been removed, torn down and bottom end is back together. Just waiting on my pistons, then gonna drop them and cylinders off to my machinist to bore them and finish this thing off!

As usual, didn't take many pics at all :(, but I do have pic of the piston that I figured will make for good conversation. Nah, it didn't get hot...

Also, I just realized we have a 2 stroke boat section too, maybe I should have posted this there? Been spending all my time in this section, I had forgotten all about it lol.
 
Good Lord Kwik, I bet that's what was making that funny noise. WOW is all I can say. Take time for some pics. Treat it like a child, you are gonna take pics of your new addition, aren't you? :D
 
I never got to hear this one run, the seller said it would make a grinding noise when running prior to it locking up lol.

I have never been one to take pics when working on stuff. I sometimes think about doing it, then once I get into the groove it never crosses my mind again- and if it does, I don't give a crap at that point. Oh well. I'm trying lol.
 
Motor is back in. All that is left is plugs and cooling hoses and I can fire it up! Mosquitoes were getting bad and I was whooped from a whole day crammed in that engine bay, so I called it quits for the night. Needed all the welsh plugs replaced on the pipes, so we did that yesterday... After being crammed in that stupid thing all day, I am seriously considering selling it- that thing SUCKS to work on!!!!!! I will scuttle it before I cram my ass back there to do another motor job lol.
