99 GTX Limited Stopping

Please help me.
I have a seadoo 99 GTX Limited,When i'm driving it along it just stops,I just hit the start button again it starts instantly,It does it at all throttle ranges but maybe a bit more at full throttle or its bumpy water, The funny part is it just does it at anytime.
Also the start/ Stop button is hard to press to get it to start,you have to push button very hard.
I took it out today and it stopped on me about 12 times.
I'ts getting annoying, Please help me
 
A few things to look at: check the start/stop switch itself, check connections in electrical boxes for corrosion and good connection, check dess post and lanyard(try another lanyard if you have one). If all your connections are good I would bet the DESS post is going bad.
 
Yes, :agree: with the above. Also, check your compression. What you describe is indicative of sticking a piston.
 
:agree: Had that problem last summer and ended up piston was dead and a hole in the main fuel line coming from the crank to the carbs. Do a compression test as stated above to rule that out. Then dive into the electrical system.
 
Thanks i will try all those things this coming weekend.
Although it's not compression it's all good.
It just stops,But hit the button it starts before you even get off the plane
Also if it was lanyard would it not beep when it disconnects and reconnects ?

ROM chip....

:agree: with all the above about the lanyard post. This is a simple fix and you don't have to get a new lanyard. The reason it's not beeping is because it's not the cap, it's the post.

You can try to clean it. Don't use any electrical solvent.

The cap contains a ROM (read only memory) and the post is the communicator. The post connects the ROM to the MPEM via the magnetics of the post. If the magnetism of the post grows weak, it doesn't take much to loose that communication network and shut you down. This exact same description you gave happened to me a couple years back. Hi People,
I tried all those things you mentioned, Still didn't fix the problem, Any more ideas, I took note this time,It seems to be at it worst over 5000 revs, If i drive it sensibly under those revs all seems fine, I can not go for a ride and sit on full throttle it just stops.
Now i had a look and it seems to have grey fuel line but i'm unsure if it has been replaced. How can i tell if its the original part
Please help
 
Did you replace the DESS post?

There are a few for sale on ebay .. $20.00. (new around $90)


The grey fuel lines maybe causing a lean condition in the engine (bad) but the fact that your display goes blank leads to an electrical type problem. (DESS post still)

As the experts said above, it is probably DESS post related as it is a common failure point on this vintage of ski.

Thanks i will try and buy a new dess post, (although you say ebay has them for $20) I'm in Australia,do i also have to get new lanyard to suit dess because i tried a friends lanyard and it would not work. Sorry about the dumb questions,I'm new at these seadoos

If it has grey fuel lines, they should be replaced. If they are the originals fuel lines, and they probably are, the carbs should be removed, cleaned and rebuilt. Lots of info on here and other forums regarding those grey fuel lines and the damage they do. I just bought a 98 GTX this past Saturday with grey fuel lines and a blown 951. It's not just a coincidence. Good Luck. Please keep us posted when you do fix the ski. Oh and no you do not have to get a new lanyard with a new post, just the post. If you buy a new lanyard, a dealer will have to program it into your MPEM in order for it to work.

Thanks, I just fitted a new stop/ start switch, so will see how it goes this weekend, I emailed the guy with the dess post on ebay usa,Still no reply, i will replace grey fuel lines,hope this works
 
Rick, you can't just replace the lines. They deteriorate from the inside out. When they do, they plug up the internal filters in each carb. Which in turn starves the engine for fuel and causes it to run lean. Those lines on your ski have had 10 years to slowly melt away internally. If you still have good compression, I would do the lines and clean and rebuild the carbs before I even rode the ski again. There are no guarantees, but I bet this solves your problem.

Your friends lanyard will not work because it is not programmed. Now, if he wants to let you take his post out and use it on yours for a few days to see if that solves your problem, then you can do that. But, it has to be his post and your lanyard.............:cheers:
 
I replaced the grey fuel lines, still stopping. Just got my new DESS post today i will test this weekend and let you know how it all goes.
 
Hi guys tested my new DESS post today, Still stopping.Any more ideas please help.
I'm about to burn it, i've had enough of it.
I replace fuel lines but
I haven't pulled the carbs apart yet because i think its a electrical prob.
Remember it starts again instantly
But if all else fails i will have to pull carbs off, Don't want to it looks like a big job

The grey fuel lines have likely caused a built up of "gunk" in your interal carb filters. (one of the symptoms is the engine dying) I would say now that you have tested most of the other outside causes, this is a somewhat simple task to do.

If you search the forums you will find the instructions here how to do it. It only takes a few hours to do and you don't have to remove the engine to do it.

The other thing to check is the grounding on the engine and in the electrical box, battery. Make sure everything is tight and has good contact.

check the float bowl o-ring, and exhaust hose. with replace'n the fuel lines, clean/replace the fuel selector also...
 
Checked out that post but symptons are a little diff to mine.
Mine stops but restarts immediatly,No Batt probs, Seams to be getting fuel
Maybe have to pull carbs,Last option
 
When it dies does it bog out or does it just die? And I would just pull out the carb and clean it.... Have you checked ur compression?
 
It just dies intantly like it has cut the power,restarts instantly also.
Compression is fine

Sure sounds electrical to me. Remove the cover from the electrical box in the rear of the ski. Look for moisture and bad connections. If all looks OK I would run the ski out of the water and go around pulling on all of the electrical harnesses to see if I could get it to quit.

Still waiting guys,Haven't found problem yet,Been raining here,hope rain stops so i can cross one more thing off the list
 
Let us know how it goes. I was having a similar problem on the last few outtings last year. I have bought a new DESS post and will install it in the spring but it sounds like I have another problem. ???
