talked to jessika at sbt today,,i told her i thought it was an sbt engine and she didnt say anything bout it bein a bad core.but ill call tomoro n check. i should have an engine thursday if it shipped today.

I've given them their own cores for sure and they never questioned anything. I've always just dropped mine off since they're just a couple hours away, I collect cores and save them for when i'm running to tampa for something else and make a pit stop at SBT.

when I go in person, to be honest, with 2 strokes: its really just a cursory visual check that they do, basically the guy looks for external cracks in the cases and if he doesn't' see any he say's "yup"

They are more particular with 4 stroke cores.

more than once I've even gone as far as removing a good crank and replaced it with one that was frozen solid, I always remove a good head and replace it with a fugged up one, remove cyl's that just need a hone, and put all the rusty, crusty, disgusting salt stuck parts back inside and bolted it back together. They really couldn't care less as long as its complete, they don't even want the pistons.

well,my order got in late,so a Friday eta is now the happnin!
I think I will look for a bottom end to send in as a core, with my cylinders, keep the head,n build another for later use.

well i got the engine friday, put it all together friday night n hauled *ss to parker for a super boring breakin period.first tank totally sucked, second tank not as horrible.we ran 3 full tanks thru it,the last one tank was ridden as normal.idles perfect, smooth acceleration, but it will not rev past 6700/6750 ish.plug color was great, have not checked comp yet, will report tomoro.
im not real happy bout the welded cases i got, since the cases im sending them are perfect!!
AND,i took a peek in the cylinders, what a horrible job they did when they pressed in the sleeves! some of the transfer port windows are off by 3/32 ish! my old cylinders are perfectly installed. cruddy machine work.

Just grenade it at the end of the season.

Did I say that out loud?

top pik is pto
bottom,mag
the light doesnt do justice as to how rich/oily the plugs look. ill throw new plugs in and report back next weekend on that lost 300 rpm.

I've heard rumors they mill out the head to reduce performance... or to reuse heads that are otherwise unable to be used.

I think we all need to keep in mind that SBT is a very high volume fast turnaround shop. They do not have the time to match every port and get the squish perfect. They get it within spec and that is it. As far as the used parts like cases and heads they are in Florida and get crap in like salt turds all day and have to make it work so that is what you will probably get back. For a fast lower cost rebuild they are the only game in town but don't expect more than a fast lower cost rebuild.

The OP was in a pinch and had to go SBT but at least he has a running ski on the quick.

For a nice rebuild especially with your core parts there are other options but they come at a price and wait.

What are the other options beside SBT?

But if you mill down the head, don't you increase compression? therefore increasing power?
It is ok to mill a head to tolerances if it is need it, it is done all the time especially if it is warped..

Not on these. The head dome shape and volume is critical on these engines. You can't just mill them you have to also recut the squish area. Personally the only shop I let machine my heads is Group K, they know what they are doing.

yip yip up.
As I stated above, I part out maybe a dozen ski's a year give or take and SBT gets the crappiest of the crap that I can bolt together. All other "good" parts are kept and sold separately. I've purchased core heads and rusty cyl's that need sleeves on several occasions just so I can replace the known good parts.

I'm not getting back the parts I gave them, so why should I send them anything that is usable to me ? As long as it meets their minimum standards then i'm happy.

I'm sure i'm not the first clown that thought of this, so I expect that they get quite a bit of the crap that really can't go anywhere else except to the scrap yard. Honestly I rarely if ever give them 951 cores unless they are really completely crapped out and won't clean up well, the cases are worth more than the core is.

I had a Group K head on mine w/the added cooling and appropriate jets... engine went and I went back to stock. I don't know what caused it, but the HP gain was definitely there over OEM spec, but I just can't take the headaches.

the quickness was what I was after..it blew up on sunday,it ran the following Friday.
so,,i havnt called sbt to ask what the payoff for the core charge is,,,anybody here know? cell usage here during the day is a big nonono,,
also, can the jugs go bigger than 1.0mm? I think I saw someone had theirs bored to 1.5,,if that's the case, ill keep all my stuff n build it.,,,providing the core isn't outrageous

Get with Minnetonka4me on a core he can ship it direct to sbt for you
