I have a bit of a problem that I can not resolve and thought some one may know the answer.
I have a 97 xp that I forgot to disconnect the battery after the last use. I ended up putting in a new battery and attempted to start her up. I get no beeps when I put the lanyard on and it does crank over but will not fire up. All of the fuses look fine as far as I can tell.
Any ideas on where to start looking? I couldnt find any info on this problem and when I called the local shop, they just want me to bring it in.

Beeper?...

It may be a beeper problem. If the motor turned over after you put the lanyard on, then seems its working. I think you might have a beeper that is out.

Quick check... take out your spark plugs. Lay them across the top of the motors head (away from the holes themselves), then put the lanyard on. Hit the start button and watch the plugs. If you see spark, the beeper is what you have broken.

I charged the battary fully before placing it into the ski. I also pulled the plugs and cranked it over and get no spark.

Did you by chance happen to accidently hooked the battery cables up backwards? Not saying you don't know what your doing, but if by accident, if can blow parts of the MPEM out.

It could just be that your CDI has gone, which in your case is located inside the MPEM. With the CDI unit gone bad, you will have no spark and you have to replace the MPEM.

Have you checked your fuses in the starter relay box?

I finaly got the ski to start and run. I ended up pulling the plugs and cleaning them a bit more, now I'm giong to replace them due to I dont know the age of them. Not much history on this ski that I know because of purchasing it from some body who could have not told me every thing.
I removed the fuel line leading to the carb and alot of pressure was relieved. After placing a fresh charge on the battery, it started right up after a few cranks. I let it run for a few mins and then shut her down. Now if I try to stat it again, the starter does a few bursts at a time and no crank over. Would it be safe to say the starter is going out or is it some thing electrical that I should look at?
It is a brand new battery and my fuses are all good.
Any ideas? Thanks or all the help and things to try. It really helped out alot.

Similar problem

I am having the same type problems. Where do I find the the starter relay box fuses?

Thanks,

starting problems

The fuse is located on the left side of the ski after the motor. Its the box with the wires that lead to the spark plugs. Inside that box is a fuse and the main fuse panal is in the nose of the craft. to access the fuses there, simply pull the small cover off located on the left side of the main panal. This is where mine are located on a 97 xp.
