97 xp vts...different type of problem...broken rod

Out on the water today, things were getting rough and the pump nozzle on my xp ended up bashing against the hood of my gts. The vts rod broke, not the metal rod that you can adjust, but the plastic one that goes into the boot. Anybody know what exactly this is called so I can try to find a new one?

I really hate not being able to adjust the nozzle and jump around one minute, then run flat out the next.

This is the piece that broke.

The part that connects to the adjusting rod.

Plastic end busted right off and is still attached to the metal rod.

The broken part appears to be #27 actually...the sliding rod.

Minnetonka is coming through yet again. Here's a picture of the carnage

The dog screw type anchor failed, so I was forced to tie them both to an auger type anchor, which failed with both machines on it.

The xp came down on the hood of the gts while I was wrestling with them both trying to get them secured again.

Not to hikack but how do you remove the vts. I was able to remove the motor assembly but unsure how to remove the housing and rod which runs through the hull to the nozel

Unscrew the joint that connects the plastic rod to the metal rod (directly in front of the boot on the rear of the machine.)

Take the clamps off the rubber boot, pull the boot off the end carefully.

Slide the plastic rod out from the inside.

It might have taken me 5 minutes from the time I started until I had everything apart.

Okay maybe I was not seeing things correctly when I looked as I didnt think it could be done that way. Ill have to check again when I have time to work on it some more.

$25 and a few minutes of work and it's fixed. Once again, Minnetonka4me came through with the part.

what actually seals the hole in the hull the vts goes through. I was messing with mine and noticed that the entire unit was able to be spun. When you looked at the vts from the rear you could see the big black nut thing by the pump turning. Is that normal????

I would have tried to inscrew it but there is no way to get a wrench up in there

well... take off the big black nut and there should a large rubber washer/o ring thing in there to seal it. I took mine apart before and it was missing. The P.O. appearently tried to silicone the whole thing and that didnt work lol

This rod replacement didn't require getting that far into it. I took the rubber boot off, pulled the vts cover off, pulled the motor out...then the big plastic rod came right out through that hole. Didn't have to get any further into it.

It gave me a chance to take a good look at the vts motor, and there is some minor corrosion on it, but considering the type of riding I've been doing...there wasn't a drop of water in the case at all. It appears that I've already got the updated clips on the vts boot...and the boot itself was in perfect condition. Probably replaced during one of the many trips this machine took to the repair shop. Guess it was pretty unreliable before I got my hands on it.
