Ok so it should have turned over right away jumping the solenoid? Thats what I figured. Ok I will get a voltmeter and let you all know ty again everyone!

97 Seadoo XP 787

Ok several issues.

No spark, beeping, or engine activity.

I have seen several threads about this issue before. I have checked everything to make sure it was not my battery, ground wires, fuses, corrosion on connecters. I used electrical cleaner and dielectric grease. Tried jumping the starter solenoid using a car battery still nothing. Ski has fuel and good compression. With lanyard plugged in there is no action at all. No beeps nothing. Gauges do not turn on or light up either. I guess there is a standard mode and advanced mode. I do not think I can get into either of those. Also with spark plugs out, I can manually turn the drive shaft. So that has been checked. Beeper issue? DESS post? I should be hearing something right? Not getting spark either could it be ignition coil? Every connection is secured and cleaned.

I want to include this ski was working fine when I bought it back in Feb 2013. With the season around the corner getting it ready now. It will not turn over. When trying to get it started a week ago, after pluggin the lanyard in, I would get two beeps and the engine would try to turn over. This week no beeps, nothing at all. Is there a way to test the MPEM to make sure the MPEM is seeing the lanyard plugged in?

I don't think it's fair to the guys who are trying to help you to start another thread on the same subject. If you want I will merge this post with the other thread. We really need to close one of these threads, let me know which one.

BTW, I think you have a battery cable problem, the cables tend to corrode from the inside out, twist the cable if it crunches it's corroded. If the voltage drops below 10v. the MPEM will drop out.

Lou

Yes if you can please merge it, that would be great. Im sorry. I just kinda thought it was a different subject since the beeping stopped. I know I mentioned it before, but thinking it might be something due to the fact I have checked everything except now getting into actual main components. Bad ground I could have sworn I checked to make sure everything looked good. So even though it worked a month ago, it can corrode and still cause this problem. This will make the MPEM not function and cause no spark?

Also reading a few things if it is a bad ground wire. I can hook up jumper cables to the battery. One Black on the negative and the other black one on a bolt on the engine. This can work as a replacement ground wire correct just for testing?

Well not completely, if one or both of the battery cables are corroded you're not really bypassing these cables.

Lou

Ok so even the positive cable can be bad as well. Man this sucks. lol. But still if it works then ground is bad correct?

these skis are touchy, even with the jumper cable it may not work right because of the longer cable causing too much resistance. check all your battery cables check all the ends tug on them with a pair of pliers.. make sure the bolt that holds the ground cable down to the starter is tight... then make sure u have a fresh powerfull battery in there... (i once had a ski that i was trying to start with a booster pack.. it would crank like crazy but it wouldnt start.. i put a different new battery in and it started right up.. like i said these skis are touchy0

Where exactly is the the negative battery cable located in the hull. I see the end connected to the battery but where does the other end lead to so I can think about replacing. Also don't I have to take off the plastic box on the side of the engine to get down to the starter?

did you check to see if you have voltage at the solenoid? you should be able to put a wrench across those two posts and turn the starter over as that's a direct connection. if it turns over, it might be your dess post. did you make sure all that stuff is plugged in and in plugged in properly (wire colors match)?

Yea I made sure everything was plugged in correctly. I did put a wrench across the two posts it tries to turn over but still doesn't.

(not sure if you've already done this) but I'd pull the main pos and neg cables off and inspect them very carefully. The neg goes from battery to the starter, the pos goes from battery to the solenoid. I know it's a bit of a PITA, but I still really think it's your cables. I've had them snap off at the terminal from the beating my machines administers to its internals. if you take them out, you might find your problem ;)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, then I'm outta here. Check the battery cables. Everything points to the battery cables, if the MPEM voltage drops below 10v. nothing will function.

Lou

The guys are giving you good advise here, so I wont get involved. I am going to post a couple pictures of the parts and where they are located and run to so you know what your looking at, it is hard to tell sometimes when everything is assembled. Dont get frustrated, just work through each item and take your time.

Ty so much all of everyones help! I will be looking closely at the lines to see what could be causing the issue. Great pictures by the way. Definitely makes sense now. One more thing. I can see the wires go underneath the engine. I wouldn't need to unmount the engine in order to remove the battery cable would I? Just unhook them and pull them through?

You shouldn't need to pull the engine to disconnect any wires. I"m not sure how the engine is situated in the 97, but on my 96XP, it's pretty hard to get to that starter-wire bolt. You may want to remove the air-box to get a better visual.

Ok and can I just use a stainless steel wire brush on everything or is there a certain type for certain wires? I just bought a few the other day stainless steel and brass wire brushes.

I was just inspecting the e-box and found this wire. This leads to the left bolt on the starter solenoid. The other end is attached with other black wires bolted to the top of the ignition coil? Think this could be the problem?

That could be an issue for sure, it looks like someone has had problems with that before. I dont like that the wire is black there could be some corrosion in there. Cut some off and make sure it is not rotted all the way through, I would pull all those little wire off, clean and inspect them and reassemble with some dielectric grease. Inspect that plug beside the fuse as well. Many times the black ebox will get filled with water and corrode those connections. Get them fixed up and hopefully you at least get your beeps back.
This is what mine looked like.

Well it is the same but instead of the plug i have wires with bolts to the starter solenoid.

The wire right behind the yellow wire is the messed up broken lookin one. I think thats my ground to my MPEM? Is this correct?

Fairly confident that is not a replacement or an OEM starter solenoid. it looks like someone got fancy and did some creative wiring...
