i changed all the fuel lines(gummy). cleaned the internal carb filters(dirty). cleaned the external fuel filter(dirty). cleaned the rave valves on the head(100 hours of built-up gunge) and rebuilt the rave valve on the exhaust(bad bellow). plugs are new and i run chevron super unleaded.

the problem i'm having is starting off from a stand still. if i come to a stop and idle for a minute or so, then hit the throttle not much happens. feels as if i'm getting no fuel. i have to pump the throttle to get her to go. once it's get going all is well. seems almost as if fuel pressure has to build up before i can get on it.

i'm thinking i might need to rebuild my carbs. when cleaning my internal filters it looks as if some of the gaskets are "worn". they aren't torn or damaged, they just looked a little rough. the diaphragm looked good.

i see there are some low speed set screws. i have not touched any of these. i am pretty confident with tools, but a little nervous around carbs. i know better then to start turning screws. if it is a carb issue though, i am more than capable of rebuilding them myself. i'd just rather not try to do any tuning until i know exactly what my problem is.

everything else is running great. i'm maxing out at about 5900 rpm's according to my tach. at mid throttle the motor is powerful and responsive. most of my riding is at low to mid speeds. i like jumping waves and moshing thru the chop so i need a lot of pop. i'm doing spins and dives so i need all the low end snap i can get, as well. i've played with the rave vale adjustments a little and gotten it pretty close to where i want it, other then the stalling from idle.

so i guess my question is, "what could be causing my lag in throttle response from idle"?

thank you for any insight.

Have you replaced your fuel selector valve?

Lou

i have not replaced it. i did clean it and happened to connect it backwards. when i am running it is set at reserve. it's kinda my theft deterrent system. lol

i'm going to go switch it right now. i assume it is just a select switch which directs flow to one hose or the other. i could be wrong and it has been bothering me since i did it, 40 running hours ago.

i had a mechanic adjust my carbs about 30 hours ago. he said he leaned them out a little. it ran better after that but i have since cleaned and maintained the rave valves. it seemed to start having this issue after that.

gonna go switch those hoses on the selector valve real quick. i won't know if it helps until i go out on the water though.

thanks for the quick reply.

U didnt put the RAVEs in upside down did ya? Did you adjust the red dots? U can fine tune on the RAVEs as well, by adjusting the red dots.

its ur excel pump, on the pto carb. Remove seat, and hit throttle, see if chrome button, gets pushed inside, somewhat far, and then retracts, when you lift off throttle, should spring back, fairly quik.

i had bad hose clamps. wrong size. leaky fuel lines were causing loss of fuel pressure. i changed 11 clamps and that problem is fixed now. it pops right up.

bad ones on the right, ... 005.JPG

while doing all this i leaned on the motor. the whole thing moved. upon further inspection i found one of the exhaust mounting bolts and rubber bushing in the bottom of my hull. the 5 bolts on the rear mounting bracket were also all loose. the whole motor has been rattling around. shame on me. i went thru everything this time.

that's when i found the blown out exhaust hose. i had to order a new one and it won't be here until mid week. i think this is why i couldn't get over 5900 rpm's. hopefully i found everything this time. :willy_nilly:

i'm amazed that it was running as good as it was after finding all these little issues. each one on it's own makes a big difference, i would think all of them together and i'd be dead in the water. i thought it was running pretty good before all this. each time i take it out it gets better and better.

i think i went thru everything now. i'm still only hitting 6400 rpms, averaging around 6200. not sure what more i could do to get maximum rpm's. still seems like it's not quite there.

the low end is pretty good. it pops right up now with no stalling or sluggishness. i checked my wear ring and it looks perfect. no scratches, nicks, or dings. i did not check the clearance, but i couldn't see daylight thru it. it appears to be fine.

if only i could get another 800 rpms out of it, .....

Throttle Cable

You'll need to take the breather box off. Check to see if there is any slack in the throttle cable. You can adjust it by moving two nuts where the cable mounts to a carb. bracket, it will become real evident when you see it.

I don't have a tach. on my ski, but I got about 2 more mph after I adjusted mine.

Lou

had her out yesterday. everything ran great. pops right up. just can't seem to find that extra 800 rpm's.

my idle is at 1400 rpm's on the water.

all filters are clean, including internal carb filters.

RAVE valves are cleaned and set at flush.

water box pressure valve is rebuilt and set at all the way down.

all bolts, hoses and clamps are repaired and tightened.

plugs are new.

burning chevron super unleaded.

maxing out at 6200 rpm's.

impeller and wear ring look good.

i checked the throttle cable and it seems to be fully opening the lever on the carbs. i could tighten it a little but i don't want it to be too tight and break on the water.

i'm not sure where to go from here, other than back to the lake.

Same prob on my GTX LTD!

Done Everything you've done? I've heard theories of the Ethanol they're putting in the gasolines are causing probs? Dunno! I'm happy it's running as good as it is! My GSX is down for the season!

it hits 6900 rpm's when i go airborne. once i land it drops down to 5800. it was hitting 6800 rpm's before i started fixing everything. i don't know what to do now.

hits 6800 - 6900 rpm's when air borne still. drops to 5400 when i land. seems like something is causing drag. i may recheck my wear ring. gonna do a compression check as well.

went thru everything again. i cleaned the rave valves. they had a little build up on them. tightened all my fuel line clamps. cleaned the internal carb filters. there was a little slack in my throttle cable. i tightened that. checked the compression. got 153/155.

i haven't made it out to the lake yet, but i did take some pics of the new plugs after the last 6 hours of run time.

still can't get over 6000 rpm's on the water, unless i jump it. it hits 7200 rpm's on the trailer.

will a worn wear ring/impeller cause my rpm's to lag?

what if i wax the bottom of the hull?

i have a piece of stiff wire that measures. 0.042". it passes between the impeller and wear ring in about 3/4's of the areas measured. the spot it doesn't pass thru it "sticks" in. my clearance exceeds the 0.040" maximum.

i guess that's good news and bad news. hopefully this will be the last thing i need to do.

can anyone link me to and impeller tool? thanks.

:willy_nilly:

my local seadoo dealer had the wear ring but had to order me the tool. i have everything pulled and the pump and new ring in my lap. i just have to wait until tuesday for the tool to arrive.

well it has a little more bite now. replaced the wear ring. the old one didn't look that bad. seems to grab a little better. still having top end issues. can't get over 6000 rpm's, or 45 mph.

i give up.

seems to have started once i cleaned the RAVE valves and repaired the water regulator. maybe i have a line backwards or something.

i hit 65 MPH 2 months ago. today i can hit 45.

something is not right.

i have not checked the backside of the carbs. the sides with the springs and valves/jets. i have checked the opposite sides. the sides with the filters.

clueless at this point.

:confused::confused::confused:
