I have a 97 GSI that died in the middle of a lake last weekend for no apparent reason. A buddy of mine is fixing it, and he found the 5 amp fuse in front was blown as well as the fuse in the rear black compartment near the battery. He replaced the fuses and installed a used (but in very good condition) flywheel, and a new $320 part that goes under the flywheel (the parts list says it is a plate-arm assembly, but I think it may be called the magneto or stator.....not sure). Now it has no spark at all. He says it is not blowing fuses any more, and he thinks it may be the MPEM. I have read on this forum that the MPEM could just have a bad diode that can be pretty easily replaced. My question is....could it be the MPEM, and if so, could it just be the MPEM diode that I can fix without breaking the bank? Any help would be appreciated....the summer is quickly coming to an end :-(
