RESTO 96 XP Restoration...Excited!

Since I was gone from the ski for a few days, I went ahead and ordered the correct solenoid to have when I returned. But the next tome it goes out, I'll be sure to try out the technique. Thanks for the help though!

Whelp figured out the problem I think...while cleaning the interior with some purple power and draining the oil from the oil reserve (he was running some God awful cheap stuff in it), I noticed there was a heck of a lot of nasty fluid in the bottom of the hull. Fearing the worst, I first traced my hands along the fuel lines and voila....a giant hole in a fuel line. It was leaking everywhere.

So I'm also assuming this was the reason why my exhaust was spitting out a lot of oil?

Good thing you found that! You don't want raw gas under the seat.

All these old Seadoos spit out black goo after being put away wet and then sitting a while. You may have leaky needles and seats in the carbs also. It's nothing to fear at this point really.

I love a 95XP. I picked one up since you were here myself. I'm gonna try and get that XP800 on craigslist today if it acts right in the water.

Working on the skis. My Buddy purple powered the Yamaha head to toe and I gotta say, it looks damn good. Cranks up with barely a touch, and I don't see any leak on the heads....might've gotten lucky.

I buffed and waxed both of these but as you can tell, one didn't exactly work too well. It looks like mildew, but nothing I've done has even phased it...any tips?

Taken today...the 95 runs like crap in the water, definitely needs the carbs cleaned and anybody that wants to chime in on ways to help is more than welcome.

Takes forever to crank, acting like it's flooded right off the bat even with the gas turned off (that's about the only way I can get it to crank). Once cranked, it won't rev above idle for a good thirty seconds, then the throttle response takes forever but it slowly gets better. Top speed was about 40-42. It takes forever to get going.

but I have to say, it is still fun a crap. Very happy with my purchase

It sounds like the 95 has leaky needles and seats. It's a great idea to go through the fuel system of any new keeper anyway. That's a nice pair there.

Should I hit it with some sea foam first or go ahead and break it down to clean it up? Just hesitant to take it apart, but from what I've read it sounds easy enough to do

Fiddling with the 95 earlier, was about to break down the carb when a wild hair told me to crank it (or attempt to) and give it a few brraps. It started first touch, had excellent throttle response and sounded amazing? Was it just badly flooded? Ugh

You should still go through them, a hour of time will save you hours of grief at the lake. Your filters are most likely clogged. You may be running lean. It may run great out of the water but the real test is with a load on it.

And soccerdad and fokker, got bored earlier and me and my dad got to Fiddling with the lawn mower solenoid. Pops used to be an electrician back in his younger days, and we created a monstrosity. We wired up the solenoid like advised, but also spliced the wiring a third way and wired up the seadoo solenoid plug in (the black and yellow wired plug) and left it hanging. So now, when my newly ordered seadoo solenoid arrives and if the lawn mower one goes bad, I can quickly plug and play, with just a quick wire nut of the hot wires so they aren't flailing around (we wired it also so you can easily take off those wires completely also, without any snipping)

Reading over, it may not make sense because I'm an idiot with words, but she Crunk right up and I'm pretty pumped about fixing it! Thanks for the help gents!

Arrived home late last night from the drive back from SC with both XP's on the double trailer in tow. Trailer did well, which I was nervous about because of the 10 hour drive. Walked into my house to find my Hydro-Turf box and solenoid waiting for me...feels like X-mas! Going to wait for this muggy Florida rain to pass and should have the new Turf installed by the weekend. Will definitely posts some picks.

A few quick comments: I'm still nervous about taking apart the carb, is it hard to break it all the way down, clean it, and build it back without any complications? Don't want to screw the wrong screw or change something that shouldn't be changed.

Also, I'm contemplating taking off the XP decals on the 96 XP so that the color scheme will better match the Turf i'm about to install. What are ya'lls thoughts on this? I know it will mess with the originality, but I've already got the UMI handlebars, single gauge hood and A/M seat...originality has pretty much been thrown out the window so far...

Just take your time with the carbs and spray all screws and bolts with some pb blaster and let soak for awhile.
When I ordered my oem carb kit, it came with a diagram for removal and install.

Just let me know if I can help

Glad it worked out. Now that you don't need it! Good to know for everyone else that may find this thread though. I would probably set it back to stock and use the new one. And keep your wiring harness you just made and the lawnmower one for emergencies.

Take the carbs apart. There are really only two screws to adjust. Finding the specs is easy. If you can, check the pop-off pressure. If you can't, then do not change the spring on the arm that holds down the needle. Also, make sure you have a good screwdriver when you try to unscrew the screws inside the carb. They tend to round out the heads. An impact driver may be needed. Read the sticky on adjusting carbs at the top of this forum. Good hints on cleaning the little holes inside.

Do it on a tray so if you drop something, it does not bounce across the garage. Good luck.

Taking off the decals is pretty easy with a heat gun. Harbor freights sells one for about $9. We peel them off all the time. This is our 96 xp's with no decals, well no stock decals we had the seadoo on the bottom made.

I am not a big fan of the pink.

The carbs are very simple to just open and clean. Just do one side at a time and get an impact driver from harbor freight($8). Some of the screws may be a bugger to get out.

Finally got around to putting on the turf, now it looks weird because of the decals so definitely decided to take them off. Waiting on heat gun to arrive

That heat gun works good for bringing the black back in those rear corner rails also.

I can see what's happening here....That purple seat is gonna stick out like a diamond in a goat's azz when you pull the graphics! If you decide to order a new seat cover let me bring you that stock seat to trade please.

You will like those carbon fiber dash plates that are going around also(replaces purple decal on dash). I forget what member was making them.

Yeah Matt probably gonna order either a seat cover or a whole new seat all together so you're more than welcome to get your seat back lol

There comes a time in a mans life when he must make hard life decisions.....and mine is now, ugh.

My Fiancée is pregnant, and I gotta decide if I should sell my xp's or not. The money would definitely help, but damn I don't wanna!

Well first of all, congrats. Kids are a bunch of work and a bunch of joy. Definitely a great change in your life. Since you are getting married, you can register at all the PWC online shops and you can get seat covers, turf and wear rings as wedding presents ;) Who needs fancy china or another coffee maker.

I would keep at least one of the skis for as long as possible. It will help with the stress of the upcoming change! The good news is they won't really loose value. Just stop the restoration stuff that costs money. Your muscle and some scrubbing can still get them looking pretty. Then sell the XP, get a GTX, and a baby life jacket... Moving from the hot rod to the minivan. Again, congrats!
