Mikekim said when he pushes the start button he gets a click from the solenoid, that eliminates the dess post and start stop button. I would say it is a bad solenoid.

$79 to register the XP that hasn't been registered since 2009. Not too bad. I'm going to buy the solenoid and all the other stuff in the next day or so.

Good point. I thought that maybe the click was from a relay (other than the solenoid). Would the holder relay click if either the dess post or start/stop button is bad?

no. if the post/ dess was bad all you would be able to do is hit the start button and get the mpem to do its 30 second test.

My solenoid on the ski I just got was clicking hard but not transferring power across...so while I was pushing the start button I rapped on it with a screwdriver handle many times...next thing you know it started working better...now days and many uses later...it never fails to hammer down...if that ski of his hasnt been registered since '09...things are likely gummed up from sitting...also...my beeper wasnt beeping at all...so I put power to it and rapped on it too and huala...she beeps like a mother now...food for thought...also you can test the magnetic part of the DESS post by doing a continuity test on the leads with the key on and off...not sure on the MPEM...I just know that I thought a bunch of stuff was shot on mine that wasnt...just had to blow the cobwebs out...LOL

Its all fun and games till your in the middle of the lake and it decides to turd out on ya. Stupid solenoids.

Check the little connector on the solenoid for corrosion. Its prob the solenoid but its worth a look. If you put a volt meter on those two wires it should have 12v when you hit the start button.

Hahahaha...this is true! Its not necessarily the best solution...but trying to get a down ski running could cost a ton of dough if your just replacing stuff willy nilly...I go the route of crossing things off the probability list one by one so I only have to replace the stuff that is really shot...checking connections for corrosion is essential...in my case...the solenoid was malfunctioning internally...so tapping on it worked in my case and it works perfectly now...good example is my Hyundai Elantra...it was wanting to overheat last week and I determined the cooling fan wasnt coming on like it should...so I pulled it out and shot a bunch of electrical cleaner into the motor and a ton of filthy nasty black crap poured out of it....so after cleaning the motor thoroughly it kicks on and runs strong every time...things just get gummy sometimes...now, that being said...if money is no object...spend away! But then...if money wasn't an issue...we wouldn't be buying 96 Seadoo's in the first place right? LOL

That's why I always ask the guys on this forum before buying stuff. I haven't bought anything that I haven't used. the troubleshooting they went through with me yesterday got the engine to turn, so I could get a compression test and narrow it down to a bad solenoid. My friends are pretty amazed that I'm coming through on fixing the skis but it is only because of all the helpful people on this site. 95 XP 717 is a beast and I can't wait to see what the 787 feels like.

A great product for cleaning electrical connections is a spray called DeOxit. I was turned on to it by BMW guys and it is expensive but has done the trick on everything I have tried it on from switches to connectors and it is safe on plastic. It is not just a cleaner but desolves the corrosion. You can get it online or Guitar Center has it. The musicians use it to clean their audio jacks for better sound.

^^parts express. I have almost bought it to try but didnt want to spend that kind of $$. Now I will. thanks!!

I bought some Deoxit to clean my spark plug boots. Don't know if it did anything but I used it on my guitar and amp connections when I use to play with excellent result. Thought about spraying Deoxit onto the VTS motor hoping it has fairy dust action. Bought a gallon of XPS synthetic oil at the local dealer for $45. Girls at the counter were nice and then I walked to the service department and ordered two new gas tanks. The PWC mechanic was a cool guy. Because he asked I told him about the starting symptoms of my 96 Xp, arcing the solenoid, that it turned over and that I bought a new solenoid he said, "Yup, that's probably it." Said to bring it in tomorrow but I want to wait until I get the new fuel sensor float so I can stand by and wait for him to bull the baffle out for me. Fuel baffle filter on my 95 is a little loose, because the baffle has a little crack. I hope it doesn't break off and the sensor falls out. It's working perfectly right now. I'll just tell him when I take it to him. Strange I never felt weird about taking my car to somebody else to fix but I don't fix my own car so I guess it's different. If I fixed my own car I'd probably feel the same way... I don't want anybody messing up my XPs. hahaha.

I was reluctant on the DeOxit too due to the price but was doing some work on my BMW K100LT and I am glad I spent the money as it worked great and now I use it on all electrical parts that need cleaning. It works but I don't think anything will bring back a VTS motor.

So I was working on the seadoo today. Got the carbs out when some punk kid drives by and shoots me in the back with a BB gun. My friends and I jumped in the car and found them parked around the corner. Another day in the LBC.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Not gunna lie I got a real good laugh out of your expense on that one, kinda like a few weeks ago I was sitting in my car at night for a minute after getting home late from the bar, parked on the curb on the street, some jackass kids came by and egged my car and I chased them down lol

Yeah. The cop asked if I wanted to press charges and I thought about myself at 19 years old and just asked the police officer to scare him. He had a fake ID in his wallet so that's like a $400 ticket. I didn't want to go to court. When I was his age I did way worse stuff so I figured it's just coming back to me. I wanted to slap the kid for being a dumbass. Who parks around the corner?

That's why I posted. Thought it was funny seadoo experience. Glad you got a laugh. :) Got the carburetor out today and it's clogged up pretty bad. Everything is really clean though. It was a lot tougher to get the carb off on the 787 than the 717.

Yeah, I wasnt really too mad either about it either, i did way worse things than that, although I found out the next morning that the moron hit my hood with it and it f'd up the paint and chipped it real good...oh well probably karma for all the shit i did. Take some pics of the inside of the hull and the carb's inside's as well

I took a picture of the inside with the carb hanging by the cables. I'll post ASAP. Carbs in my car, I'll grab it and take pictures of the guts. nasty stuff in the holes for the fuel.

Got the hoses all off the carb and its in a box to send to Dr Honda tomorrow. He did a great job at a very reasonable price on my last carb for the 95 XP 717 so the choice was simple. If you want it done right, go with Dr Honda. All I need to buy now is 20ft of fuel hose and some clamps. Solenoid, oil filter, fuel float sensor, tygon tubing and vts boot in the mail. I confess I didn't change the vent hoses on my 95 XP because I ran out of hose but I will on the 96 XP.

My friends boat with a Ford 302 onboard is bogging and I'm trying to help fix it but it's proving harder than expected. Gets to about 2000rpms runs great then bogs. Its a really old boat but the engine sounds nice and it's over 35ft long. It used to be a USC marine research vessel. Stickers still on there. Carb was rebuilt, new air and oil filters but no change. Right now I'm thinking they should have changed all fuel lines, clean out check valves/anti siphon valuves, test vacuum lines, and each spark plug and boot for spark. If anybody has any suggestion feel free to chime in. I'm ready to throw the kitchen sink at this thing. Kind of off subject but you guys seem to fix all kinds of stuff so I thought I'd ask.

Depending on how old/new the boat is, the old fords 302's (5.0) and 351's (5.8) used a points distributor not a newer modern electronic ignition, it might even be a dual point distributor. Points were as simple as an ignitions as it could get, you could always get home with a set of points. Go through and check the dizzy, replace the points and condenser, set the points and your probably not old school enough but you'll need a dwell meter and timing light, use Google. Check all the operation of the mechanicals inside the the dizzy too, I can't remember if they ran a vacuum advance on them or not, it could be an adjustment of that or replacement. Or see if you can get a Pertronix electronic ignition conversion for it. That is just one of many things to check, not quite as easy as a two stroke, it's not just fuel lines and filters. Heck it could still be the carb, accelerator pump or any other small adjustment, jets, float level and I could keep the list rolling. Best of luck.

Wow. Ty. I'm guessing years of fixing stuff yourself and you learned a thing or two? I really appreciate it. I was at a loss and we don't have money to pay our mechanic even though he barely charges us. He knows we are poor and he's really cool but we don't call him to save face i guess.
