I bought a '96 GTX today. We tried to do a compression check. We put a new fully charged battery in it. We put the lanyard on and it beeped, we pushed the start button and it beeped... that was it. I felt pretty good about the character of the seller so I made a low offer and ended up with the ski. I took a risk but..... maybe I come out ok. Aside from wiring connections any thing you would point me to check for first? MPEM? Jeff
 
Pull the plugs and take the pto cover off and try to spin the motor by hand, at least to rule out if the engine is completely locked up, if it spins, you can jump the starter solenoid to do a compression test in a pinch
 
1. You could try jumping the solenoid first to see if engine will turn or not. That is quite easy to do. Aside from a few sparks it is harmless!

2. If not, you should try to turn the engine manually by turning the shaft behind the engine with your hands (there is a plastic guard to remove usually above the shaft). Make sure plugs are out or engine will be very difficult to turn. This is also easy to do.

3. If engine doesn't want to turn manually, check the impeller at the back of the ski to see if it is stuck by debris or a piece of rock or something (you can also remove impeller just to make sure). Removing the impeller is relatively simple to do if you are a bit of a junior mechanics.

4. If impeller is OK and/or removed and the engine still doesn't turn, then there is a good chance (or rather bad luck) that the engine is seized or that something is stuck in the engine. Could also be the starter blocking the way or rotary valve if your ski has one (other people on this forum will provide more answers I am sure).

That's where I would start. Did the first two steps before myself but not the third one and certainly not replacing/fixing an engine (mine was seized when I checked that two years ago, had to replace it).

I get one beep when I push the start button. Also I took the plastic piece off the back of the motor and was able to turn the impeller shaft. I will try to jump the starter solenoid tomorrow. The starter is not easy to get to!
 
No, the solenoid is in the rear electrical box. Just open it up and the solenoid is in there.
Put a screwdriver across the two big lugs.
 
And you should only get two beeps when you put the key on. Then no more beeps when you press the starter.
 
Well that is easier!! I tried to follow a red wire to the motor. I found what I believe is the starter. Thank you!! I love this forum!

Follow the red wire from the battery. The first thing you'll come to is the solenoid.
 
If the engine turns, it is a relief already. Doesn't mean it is A1 but solenoid test should let you know if there is an electrical problem or not. Then since it is a new ski to you, I would go with a compression test. I learned the hard way, should have done that when I bought my used ski.

And use a compression tester you know is good. I used an oreily loan a tool one, just to find out later by a mechanic that the loaned tester read 20 psi lower than the mechanics test
 
Ok. Compression test went ok. Jumped the solenoid and she turned over. 145 pto side 150 mag side. Should I start it? If I jump the solenoid to start it will the start button work to shut it down? I don't want to start it if I can't shut it down right away.
 
You should replace your solenoid first, then the ski will start with the key. I would not recommend starting it with the solenoid not knowing if you will be able to stop it with the key (not even sure you can start it without the solenoid).

Maybe I will just wait until I go thru the fuel system before I start it. It still has the infamous Tempo lines.
 
I only get 1 beep when I connect the key... I understand I should hear 2. Will the new solenoid fix this or is this another issue?
 
One beep means that the MPEM does not recognize that key. So either it is the wrong key, or they key has a problem. Start by cleaning the DESS post off that the key goes on. Then clean the inside of the key. Nothing will work until you get two beeps. You may ask the seller if they have any other keys for it. If not [MENTION=41828]Minnetonka4me[/MENTION] can add your key to your MPEM, but you will have to pull the MPEM and send it to him along with your key.
 
Its a key issue. That key does not match the machine, or in rare cases....lost programming.

Yes I can reprogram it, but yes I will need the MPEM sent to me to do so.
 
Yes, if you are using the wrong key, the solenoid might just be right. I had not picked that up in your previous conversation. I had a Sea-Doo dealer program two keys for me two years ago because I had lost the original keys... It was about $75.00 per key I believe including brand new keys. If you have a Sea-Doo dealer nearby, you could do that (you have to bring the machine in) or else, just do as Minnetonka4me says. You should definitely hear two beeps and if you are waiting too long to start the ski, I believe it goes to three or four beeps (mine does that I think).

Also after I install the key and it beeps once, if I then push the start button it gives one beep as well.
 
Did the seller mentioned anything about having a wrong key? This is a bit unusual. Did you tell him? Maybe he lost his key and purchased one without programming it? I believe any dealer would tell you that.

I did ask him if it could be the wrong key and he sounded really confident that that was the key and it worked fine for them. I don't know if it is relevant but the ski has been sitting a while. I don't think they used it much if at all last summer. They said it was winterized.
