96 gsx gauge removal

On my ski and 96GTI I can get my hand in where the air intake goes through, you might need to remove the little cover from the hood, there are three threaded screws you can remove with a 1/4" socket with and extension and a universal. My wife's calling for dinner if you can't find it let me know I'll see if I can find a diagram later.

I guess this hood on my gsx is different, looks to me like that the hood is a two peice(inner and outer shell) Looks to be held together from the top by the release handle bolts and there are two very small screws at the hinge end but the rivets look to be holding the two halfs together, I just wanted to make sure i need to drill them out to get to the info center...........

I know I have a different style hood, but there are a couple of like 3/4" hole, I can get in there and loosen the screws so I can slide the small hood off. I'm going to PM bigJake and see if he has ever had the gauges out of his ski.

hi, I've never had my info gauges out and it dark and raining or I would run out and take a look. I know if you push back on the front of the cover over the gauges it disengages it from the hood. Is that what you are trying to get off?

yep, that should do it. I've never actually removed mine so I'm not sure if there is any more to it, But a few times I've accidentally knocked the cover loose while pushing the ski around in the water.

hey jake, that sounds like what i need to do, so push the cover towards the back of the ski?

Jerry, sorry I was working from memory last night and got that backwards. In between rain showers I ran out and took a look at mine. To remove the cover over the gauges, it goes FORWARD not backward. there are 2 screws that slide into slots on the front and the sides hook into the hood. Give it a smack with the palm of your hand on the top edge over top of the gauges and it should slide forward

hey jake, i was trying your first way and it wasn't moving so I came in here and saw you last post, so gonna try that, i think i will still have to fish the wires back in for the new gauge, and thanks

Jerry, I had a chance to take a look at my ski today. I pull the cover off over the gauges and it is just cosmetic, It does not give you access to the back of the gauges. I then opened the hood and now see what you meant by inner and outer shell. It looks to me like what you want to do is remove the 2 small screws down by the hinge, 1 on each side of the hinge. It looks like you also have to remove the bolts for the latch and the mirrors if you have them. Once you do that it looks to me like the hood will lift off the ski exposing the back of the gauges. If the hood does not lift off the only other place it looked to me like there may be additional screws is possibly under the rubber gasket. I was kinda in a hurry when I looked at it as I was packing up to leave the lake and it looked like rains was coming but I think if you remove those couple screws and bolts you will be inside the hood. I'm home from the lake for a few days but curious to know how it goes. keep us posted.

No such luck jake, its gonna take drilling out the rivets on the hood hinge, i can see the go through both shells, no biggie really but you would think they would of designed it better for service, thanks again

I just use a flat head to slide in between the rubber seal and the gauge and gently pry up, the gauge slides up and you can pull it out.

It was not too much trouble routing the wires back so i didnt have to separate the hood halves. But the used gauge is very dim, i dont think its much good, how bright should it be???

The gauge should be visible even in bright sunlight. One hint, if you wear polarized sunglass it will interfere with the polorization of the film on the gauge. Try wearing non polorized sunglasses see if it improves.
