96 GSX - Dumb me hooked up battery backwards and blew a fuse - how to replace?

I was putting in a new battery in my 96 GSX and did the genius thing of hooking the terminals up backwards. I realized it pretty quickly, but I'm pretty sure I still blew a fuse or something.

The new battery is fully charged. When installed in the ski (the correct way), I don't even get a single beep when putting the key in the ski. The old battery would make beeps, but not start. Now when I hook the old battery back up, I'm no longer getting any beeps on that either which is what leads me to believe I blew a fuse.

I assume the fuse I will need to replace is in the MPEM. Is that correct?

This will sound bad, but how do I actually open the MPEM? I assume I just pull down the two tabs on the top (circled in purple in the attached pic) and pull on the tab (circled in red)??? I tried that, but haven't been able to get the darn thing open. I don't want to force any more unless I know that is the correct way to open it.

Once I get the MPEM open, how will I find the correct fuse to replace within the MPEM?

Thanks guys!!!

You have to remove the Ebox of the tray it's attached to. There are two more tabs on bottom. Then when you open it check all fuse holders but I'm afraid you might have damaged mpem internally but you might get lucky. Good luck!

Thanks Manolocross!

Oh no. I sure hope not! Isn't that what the fuse there for that exact purpose, to stop too much voltage going through and causing damage?

Hopefully for you it was just a fuse and you did not blow your mpem. You also have 2 fuses in the rear black box, you can check those too.

Yes the fuses are there to protect but not from reverse polarity! Hopefully it will work out but if it doesn't it can still be fixed!!!$$$$$$$$

Not looking good. Checked the two fuses in the back and they appear fine. I'll have to check the ones in the front.

I think the MPEM fuse is the 5amp fuse in the front E-box. If its blown there's hope.

Hey Minnetonka4me,

If it turns out I will need a replacement, how much would that be? What part number do you have?

You can PM me if you'd prefer.

I also want to post that you can send me yours so I can test it. If it is indeed bad I will program your old key to the new mpem so you have a spare.

Now that is what I call a plan!!! Check the fuses in front first... If they are ok time to pm tonka... But at least like I said it can be fixed and you will ride again!!!!

I'm with Lou on this one. The 15A in the back e-box sends the power up to the front e-box, from there, power passes through two separate 5A fuses, 1 for the MPEM, & one for the CDI. So your way more likely to pop the 5A fuses than the rear 15A. There is also a front 15A for the charging circuit in the front box you should check while your at it. I'm very hopeful that the MPEM has strong enough internal diodes to pop that 5A fuse when it was hooked up backwards. Fingers are crossed, but feel optimistic for you.

BTW, you can place a large flat place screwdriver between the halves, & gently apply some pressure while holding down the locking tabs you have circled. They don't open real easy as they are airtight, & the gasket fits snug. Steady pressure & they will separate, just be carful not to break any tabs off.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

I was able to unhinge and open the box and check the fuses. Good news is the 5 amp fuse was blown. Bad news is that replacing it didn't solve the problem :(

I replaced the 5amp and put everything back together. Hooked up the battery from my 99 GSX Limited that was fully charged. Then put the key in and was disappointed when it didn't even make a sound.

Could I have blown the 5 amp fuse AND the MPEM? That seems unlikely to me, but I don't know much. If that sounds unlikely to you guys also, what else should I check?

Thanks!

You have two modules in the gray box correct? Was their a 5A fuse in both of them? Both blown? Does your ski have two black wires connected to the battery? One to the engine block, & a lighter gage wire to the back E-box?

Yes, there are two modules in the gray box with fuses. One just has one 5 amp fuse. The other has both a 5 amp fuse and a 15 amp fuse, with a little black rubber thing with two are fuses (a 5 amp and a 15 amp). The 5 amp in the module by itself was still fine. The one that was blown was the 5 amp in the other module with the 15 amp next to it and the spare fuses. I used the spare 5 amp to replace the blown5 amp fuse.

Yes, the battery does have two black wires connecting to the battery. One to the black box in the back near the engine that contains a couple fuses (fuses in there were fine and not blown). The other wire leads to the front of the ski to the gray box (called the E-box, that houses the MPEM?)

If you have a multimeter, check to see if you have voltage on the module with the 5 amp and 15 amp fuses. There should be a black wire that comes out of that module and goes to a common grounding post inside the front Ebox. See if you have 12 V between that grounding post and both sides of both fuses. That will verify that you have voltage to MPEM and both fuses are good. If all that checks out correctly, it sounds like MPEM is fried. I really hoped that module was tougher than that.

Just to verify though, when you put the key on the post you get no beeps and no powering up of any gauges at all? Does your info center power up if you push the start button with the DESS key removed? Any activity from the VTS buttons When you do that?

Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!

I went to check ragtop's suggestion of seeing if the gauges would display anything when hitting the start button and they did. I then put the key on to test it one more time and heard the best sounding three beeps ever :)

I then tried to start the ski and after a couple attempts (sitting all winter), the ski started right up!

You guys have been incredible with all the help.....thank you, thank you, thank you!
