I am stripping a DI down to send it out for rebuild, and looking into the lower half of the engine when I pulled the reeds out the entire half of the engine if full of oil.

I did not think these engines needed to have an oil bath.

What would cause this? It will have to be added to the list along with removing multiple broken screws since this was a salt water machine.

2 stroke oil? Id say oiling system needs looking at
normal oil? Id say its come from the counter balance gear.

It is completely covering the crank. As I turn the PTO by hand I can see the oil splashing around. at least it looks like oil. I will have to feel it. Hoping it is not water

The crank shaft seal has gone bad. It allows the oil to seep past it and fill the lower crankcase up.

If the engine was still installed and running well and this happened, you would simply install a shut-off on the oil line from the tank. Turn it off when the ski is in storage and on when you would be riding it. There are thousands of skis like this...

The 951 does not have an oil bath that is fed like the rotary valve engines. So those seals only block the small amount of oil that is put into the sealed cavity. There is not enough in there too describe what your seeing. I think you need to check the actual check valves for the oil injection. It's not the crank seals.

I guess that is one more thing on the list to investigate. I was shocked to see the oil. I thought it might have been mixed with water if the previous owner did not do the correct startup / shutdown procedure with a hose, but the oil is not milky. It is blacker then black, so it has been mixed with exhaust. It would explain why there is oil all over the plugs, and in the water box.

The funny thing is it does not smoke. I would think that the amount of oil on the plugs it would smoke badly.

If there is enough oil to splash when you turn the crank it should smoke like crazy at startup. The only place that oil could come from is...
1. The oil pump check valves letting injector oil flow in.
2. The counterbalancer cavity with seals bad.
3. Someone dumped oil in the carbs or sparkplug holes.

what most likely you will find is the oil check valves are not working properly, and over time it will fill with oil. Not very common, but it does happen. Put a piece of line on each valve you should be able to blow but not suck (insert porn music here)....lol If you can suck the valve is bad.

Are both sides filled the exact same amount? If its been sitting for years, wouldn't surprise me to have a lot of injection oil in it if the valves have a slooooow leak. The DI's injection valves take a bit more abuse seeing they are directly exposed to compression/vacuum within the case. The other engines are a bit protected behind the rotary or reed valves.

The valves should hold 1-3 psi towards the engine before allowing oil to flow in the case from the pump. If they don't hold pressure, they will drip & over time & that amount could add up.
