95 speedster port engine Prob. PLEASE HELP!

I purchased a 95 speedster last year and just getting around to fixing it up now. Long story short, I was told the MPEM was bad and the boat had sat for a year. So I spent the money for a new MPEM. The problem Im having is the Port side motor will not turn over with the start button. Starb side turns over and starts just fine. I did a compresion test over the weekend and all cylinders are 145 or higher. Iv checked all the fuses in the MPEM and there all good. When I jump the port side starter solenoid , motor turns over geat. So I replaced the port side solenoid to find it changed nothing. Not even a click. The ONE battery convertion has been done, so I tried to use the boost solenoid and Ill I get is a click. Any help would be great!!

UPDATE

The clicking noise when holding the boost switch and hitting the start on either motor only makes a click from the boost soleniod. I did disconect the starter switch for port side and tested the switch, wich is working and also jumped the switch, still nothing. Any Help would be amazing!

Sure did Dr Honda and thanks for your help with the wiring. Now Im having the problem of the port side engine not turning over. Thought it was a bad soleniod, so I replaced it, still the same. When I hit the port side start button, I get nothing, But when I jump the soleniod, turns over no prob. Any help would be awsome! And boy do I wish I was your neighbor! lol

I think everyone wishes they were Doc neighbors.

Did it crank if you jumped the old solenoid?

Yep turned over great when jumped from old and also new solenoid. Thats why I was thinking the solenoid was the problem, but after replaceing with new, still nothing.

If it cranks when jumping but not otherwise. Maybe something is hooked up wrong.

Maybe the second solenoid is bad out of the box...it happens

I was posibly thinking the same so I rearanged the soleniods around and put the one I know for sure was good from starb side to port side and still the same. I did notice that the starb side hooks up battery to the left and starter to the right on the soleniod and the port side is battery to the right and starter to the left. Does this sound right??

I'm going to look over the schematic, and give it a little thought.

Oh... one thing... what's the "Boost" switch?

I may not have enough coffee in me yet... but I read this a few times and I can visualize what you are trying to say.

1) Make sure the wire from the MPEM to the start switch is good. SO... check it with a meter WAY back at the MPEM, and have someone push the button.

2) Make sure the kill switch is working. If it thinks it's "off" than the MPEM isn't going to allow it to crank. (I'm going to assume it is since one engine is OK)

3) Since it's been converted to one battery... make sure all the connections are correct, clean, and tight.

Unfortunately... I'm thinking the MPEM you have may be bad.

The boost switch was to parallel the old 2 battery set up together to make more amps to crank over an engine in case one battery was to low to do it. There are 3 soleniods. One for port motor, one for starb motor and one just for the boost(parallel of the 2 batteries) wich I only have one big battery now. I tested all 3 plugs coming from the MPEM to each solenios and they all read 12.7v when each start switch is pushed for the correct motor. So Im assuming the mpem is ok?

Problem solved. I ended up pulling both grounds to both motors and sanded on the terminals. Pluged back in and everything is working great. Who new bad ground could be such a pain, lol. Thanks for all the help from everyone!!

Hey Chadman,

I had the same problem with my 95 speedster last year, and after I cleaned the contactacts it helped for a couple of weeks. For some reason the problem came back. so I ended up putting a jumper wire between the two starter grounds. I havent had a problem since.

Just an idea if your problem comes back!!!

Best of luck buddy!!!

hey Chadman

I just bought a 95 speedster and am having the same problem. The starbord side spins and port side doesnt. I was told to change the MPEM, but before i do that i wanted to exhaust all of my options. Would a bad MPEM or ground cause the starbord side to not have any spark? I know you said you had at least one running.....

Hey Bear,

I may not be the best expert on this subject, but maybe I can help.

When it comes to a spark problem, you should first start with the plug wires. If you have spark in one cylinder and not the other, it would be a problem with your spark plug wire.

If you are not getting any fire in either if your cylinders it is probably your Stator/Rectifier (not sure how it is spelled).

These older units have a very simple system, it is either on or off, the computer doesn’t control anything except rev limit, and whether you are in neutral or not.

Check the repair manual, it has a few simple tests you can do with a volt ohm meter.

But my money is on a stator/rectifier, you can replace it with the engine in your boat, but you need a mirror and some nimble hands...

Good luck
