Hey.
so got a buddys 94 xp and he thought it was a starter problem so i put in the new starter.
connected new battery and it just dosent start. batt reads 12.65volts so thats good. no clicks, sounds or anything at all.

how do i go about diagnosing this thing..i opened the e box, there is a 5amp and 15amp fuse..both are good.
definately water has gone in the ebox..some corrosion.
i cleaned up the main connectors for the red wire and stuff...
still nothing!

The box does not look to be in goof shape.....But

Check all your grounds first of all. At the starter, battery, etc.

In pic #2 & #5 the green connector protector that's at appox. 70 degree angle.....at the break it looks like a broken wire at that point....check it out and see if it is.

yea i saw that .. some strands of the wire are broken..i just left it as its still making an ok connection..its not completely snapped

another thing...this machine is different than mine so not sure about the laynard.

there is a red and green..both separate switches
the laynard goes and hooks up to just one..i cant remember but i think its the red one
is this correctÉ

how many wires connect to the starterÉ
i have the main red on there...but i was reading the manual and its confusing me. should there be a ground wire hooking up to the starter is self or is the starter just grounded once you install the starter and bolt it downÉ

That's as bad, probably worse than any I have seen. Honestly I don't see how the ski was running at all. I tend to agree with the first post get a good used E-Box. Even with that you've still got a problem with the wiring harness, you're gonna need new connectors. Or a new wiring harness also.

What does the rest of the wiring look like, was this ski sunk? P.M. minnetonka4me and see what he thinks and see if he has the parts. If the rest of the ski looks like this it might not be worth fixing.

Lou

I got no idea if it was sunk or not.
My bud thought it was a starter issue but i guess not cuz i put in the new starter. I cant even hear the starter when i press start. Can you answer post #6..about the laynard and wiring starter. Thanks so much!

I'm not sure if I can answer your question correctly, there should only be one red wire (cable) to the starter, the black battery cable is usually grounded to the starter bracket, not to the starter itself. Not sure about the lanyard on a 94 it might be a non dess so it may just have a kill switch.

Lou

talked to my bud and he said it ran in the fall....so since it was outdoors...it got some water in there all winter long. so now it wont run.
when i took the ebox off...there was a rubber seal so i dont know..that corrosion in there looks really really old and not just from the fall. so not sure why it wont start now!

i know pricey but if he is confident with everything else on the ski... it might be worth it to buy.. the old one is obviously leaking somewhere and probably all the components are fried in there, so buying the package would be cheaper than buying everything individualy. u can try cleaning everything up but, most likely the internals are gone..

good luck to you and let us know what happens

i bought a complete front e box with mpem for a 96 xp for 90 bucks.(is that a deal or what)

and if u wanna test the e box, put the ski in diagnostic mode, (if that model has it) you press the start like 5 times and then it should beep and gauges light up, sorry if im kinda patchy on that explanation, some one who has more experience please chime in on how to do it

I'm pretty sure that this ski has the older style multi-function gauge which doesn't have a diagnostic mode, so the only way to test the MPEM is the buds system at a dealer. If you're thinking about buying this ski I wouldn't walk away I would run away, free would be too much money.

Lou

if you want to get this ski running, best is to get the new box, then go from there. possibly later on u can hard wire the gauges in if you want. but u have to decide weather or not it is worth it to put the time and money into the ski. if u dont want to fix you could always part it out

w,e u choose. i wish u the best luck

the ski has 3 guages...not like the spx with a muti guage
i am not getting this ski..i got one already.
i was just to store the ski for my buddy and put a new starter. still wont work so i thought i mess around with it and see if i get it running. plus gives me a chance to learn stuff.

has anyone suggested jumping the starter solenoid yet? the 94 isn't a DESS ski so wouldn't beep when you put the key on, if the solenoid is bad, wouldn't the symptoms be similar?

how do you jump the solenoid?

i just took my booster cables..hooked red and black to the starter then to the battery... the engine cranked over just fine.
i ran a compression test...125psi on both.
the engine wouldnt start though

i'm not exactly sure where on your ski, but the positive cable from the starter should run to one of the large posts, it'll have two large posts with heavy gauge wire the other post will have a positive from the battery, and an electrical plug coming from the MPEM, which tells it when to close the switch. the MPEM sends power to the solenoid, and it closes a switch inside, sending power from the battery to the starter. to see if the soleniod is either not working, or not getting a signal from the MPEM to fire the starter, put a screwdriver or other solid piece of metal across the terminals, the starter should crank over, or at least try to.

i'm not positive, but if you hit your start button, then jump the solenoid to crank, the ski should start up if the MPEM is good, if doesn't fire, check for spark at the plugs, if you have spark, the MPEM is good i believe.

seen some pics of other skis and noticed that there is a black cable from the starter coming out directly and also a red cable...so in mine, there is only the red wire..
so should there be another wire going to batt?

also here are some pics...wondering what is this..????
the red thing is a push button thing
