95 xp 717 (No spark)

I have a 95 xp that was idling rough before I purchased it. I rebuilt the carbs and replaced all the lines. Today I tried to start it and it was turning over but not starting. I pulled the plug wires and no spark.

Let me back up for a minute and explain something that may or may not be related. I replaced the gauges because they were sunfaded and the cowl because it was cracked. The tach I replaced the other with did not have a yellow wire running to the rectifier (maual shows the gauge and magneto go to a 2 into 1 then into the yellow and black on the rectifier) I just used a splicer and added a 22k resistor (like manual diagram shows). Maybe the previous owner replaced the rectifier so it doesnt have the 2 into 1. Thats the only logical explanation I can think of. Is this associated with my no spark issue?

I have been reading that it might be the coil or the stator? Any ideas what I should test first? If you have a simplier method of trouble shooting please point me that direction.

Thanks

The 94XP should have the 657X and it has a different ignition system. Did someone put a 717 in there?

No he said a 1995 ;). The 1995 Xperia came with a 717. Go thru and clean all electrical connections and put a little dielectric grease on them. Hope you figure it out.

The 720 engine is a simple beast.

The ignition basically is only 2 parts. You have the charging coil in the engine.... then one wire goes out of that.... then you have the CDI/Coil pack.

1) Make sure the charging coil in the engine is OK. Use a meter and check it.

2) if it's OK... disconnect the wire that branches off, and goes to the MPEM. And, then check for spark. WARNING: Do not try to start it. Disconcerting that wire removes the "Kill" and "Rev-limiter" from the system.

3a) If you still don't have a spark, check all the wires, and grounds, and if they are OK, your CDI/Coil is bad. (but that's not very common)

3b) If you do get a spark... your MPEM could be bad. BUT... check for cut in the wire... and look for a possible ground.

Open the E-box and check the fuses. Then check all connections, clean, di-electrical grease them and check the ground lug to battery negative post to see if you have continuity. Is your Stator plug connected?

Bills86s

step 1----check all the fuses (both sides of the fuse as they have been known to look good but are actually broken in a spot you can't see or if you are old like me you just can't see any way)
step two----check all the related wiring and connectors (good time to use dielectric grease on all connectors and fuses)
step 3----install the original gauges and wiring (important step)
step 4--- if still no start test every component from the spark plug all the way back to the battery by following a FACTORY wiring guide Or a FACTORY troubleshooting guide or by asking one of the experts on this forum to guide you thru step by step. AFTER MARKET SHOP MANUALS ARE, FOR THE MOST PART, A PURE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.

Another thing worth mentioning, make sure you have both plug wires hooked up to good plugs. If one wire has no gounding source (another spark plug) the other wire will have no spark. The coil sparks across both wires at the same time. Basic info, but could be easily overlooked.

Thanks 68ragtop Very few days go by that I don't learn something new. Now I understand the reason for the plug wire grounding tabs. Rick

yes, imagine a leaking fuel system & somebody arcs a spark while trouble shooting...:o

Ok..heres the fastest way to troubleshoot this...

1. clip the plug wires back 1/4"....its fixed way too many problems to not try it first.

2. Open the Ebox up and look for the black/red wire coming off the MPEM and unhook it. It should still be hooked to the coil, then head out of the box. Now crank it. If it has spark the Rev limiter in the MPEM has failed. If it does not fix the issue unhook the blk/red going to the coil now too, and put your test light in the plug you just pulled off the coil (ground the clip on the test light) crank and the light should strobe.

If it strobes, the Coil is bad, if it doesnt...its the stator.

The above will work on all 4 wire stator systems (no yellow 580s, no 93-94xp)
I have all parts available if you need something.

I pulled the plugs off and the idiot before me had the actual wire tucked into the sleeve and there was no contact. I checked that last after I checked everything else... I added a secondary filter and after cranking it a few times I did not see any fuel in the filter. I poured some fuel in the carbs and it cranks up and runs for about 3 seconds. The tank is about 1/8th full. Any ideas why there is no fuel getting to the carbs? The carbs were just rebuilt btw. Im going to fill the tank and check the lines to make sure they are routed corectly. Is there a simple diagram to go by anywhere?

No diagram but use a mirror and flash light to see markings on fuel baffle.

Another trick is blow into "on" fuel line. If you here bubbling from gas tank then that is the correct one.
Only 3 more to confirm....

I always forget to hook up the pulse....

The fuel pump area was likely not put together right if its getting no gas...thats if the lines check out.

So, true. Happened to me the other day.
I was going crazy trying to figure why it wouldn't stay running after taking carbs off to check for oil leak.

:conehead:

The pulse was hooked up. I did not bleed the pump and the something with pressure in the tank was the issue. I blew through the lines and hears bubbles. I tilted the trailer and then back down. I cranked it after I bleed the pump and there was the fuel. I took both out today and had no problems! I purchased these skis for 500 including the trailer. I just painted the hoods and added some decals.

SOB!
that was in Jacksonville?
and they both ran? No sized engines, just a battery kind of ad

:hurray:

The guy lived near jasper or live oak. The guy also gave me 2 brand new batteries in the box. I jut rebuilt both sets of carbs, replaced a oil cable and Minnkota helped me fix the electrical issue on the gsx. I just cleaned the contact and it ran.

If there was a award for best buy I think you would hold it.
Awesome buy with out a doubt.......

Yup their a little rough but for that kind of money they are freakin mint! I agree...hard to beat that deal!!
