787 Oil Question

Not open for further replies.
Roughly how much oil per 10 gallon of gasoline will consume in normal cases.
I am going to order 1 gallon of BRP XPS-2 stroke from a Canadian vendor.
Just curious about how long it will last.

Thanks

I've always used Amsoil (best oil I could find) in the Challenger when I ran the 787 in it, and that didn't stop it from blowing up all those times... I guess I'm not convinced that the benefit of full synthetic vs semi-synthetic is enough to warrant the extra cost and hassle...

Yeah, sorry I've never drank the Amsoil kool aid and really don't get the 80-1 or 100-1 ratios. That IMHO is just begging for trouble. I do know coffee tastes better if the water doesn't have a strange taste.

There are many good oils out there though, ie: most of them are fine as long as they're mixed at reasonable ratios and are used immediately after mixing. If it's mixed and sits around for some time, you're on you own b/c some oils lose their properties within a week once mixed with fuel.

The Rotax injection is viscosity dependent I think, so a thicker oil will be delivered at a different rate? I have to wonder if the seadoo injection system is pre-calibrated for these alternative oil products, I think not. So again, you're on your own

For my 951 boat, I have no plan to use anything other than XPS-II b/c I know it works.

Hey Bud, which XPS-II should I use? I found 3 different SKUs for this Super Super XPS-II.

I totally agree with your viscosity theory. It makes a lot of sense. Because when talking about the specific oil pump, it is not just about which oil is good anymore. If an A+++ oil couldn't get there in time, then you still cannot say "hmmm, delicious." :-D

Some of these guys use several cases of oil per year I think, I don't come close to that.

I think it's safe to assume you won't use any more than 1gal/60gal, worst case.

In my case, based from my memory, I'm pretty sure I burned approximately 40 gallons of fuel last year and consumed around 1/2gal of XPS-II oil. So that's around 1/80, assuming my memory hasn't slipped a few gallons of fuel and my eyes are oil tank calibrated.

Spring of last year I filled the oil tank to the level sensor grommet at the beginning of the season and this spring it's slightly more than half way down from there, the sensor light has not come on yet but I'm expecting it should soon.

You want the BRP XPS-2 synthetic in the yellow jug.

I also premix this for the other 2-stroke engines around the house, weed eaters and chainsaws, even the old outboards. And no, I don't mix it at 80:1, for these others I mix from 32:1~16:1 depending.

For what it's worth, if you don't want to read this came from the thread.

"The answer is easy; two stroke engines, in contrast to four stroke engines need mineral oil to protect against corrosion when the Doo is stored or not being operated. 100% synthetic oils do not provide that protection because the oil is 100% synthetic. (Do a search on Rotax engines if you don't believe me)."

This is what the controversy was between amsoil interceptor and dominator. Dominator didn't have the detergents that interceptor had to reduce carbon build up, in turn providing better protection over long periods of time. For me, I only put about 5 hrs on my doo the whole season. It's may 16 today and plus 5. I doubt the big water will be warm enough by mid june, there was still ice where i ride when i checked last week. I like knowing that the mineral based products will provide better corrosion protection when it's sitting for 9 months.

FWIW, my local walmart is discounting out the semi-synthetic oil BUT the full synthetic was just restocked. No discount on the full syn and I do not see signs of it going away.

Can I pre-mix 15w-40? Surely that would be enough lubrication

Yeah, looks like we need a winterization sticky describing the fogging process as opposed to an oil thread to answer newbie questions.

I fog every winter. I winterize both skis and store them in a heated garage too. Do you fog after every ride?

Both skis sit on lifts in the water during the summer once they're out of the garage, 40k from town. one time they weren't ridden for 5 weeks.

I don't necessarily fog after every ride, but if I know the ski is gonna sit more than a week or so I fog it then

Fogging after each ride like I do is probably over kill, but it only takes me a few minutes and I figure it can't hurt lol

It's not like i don't try and ride them at least once a week during the summer, but sometimes chit happens and I can't make it out there, ya know?

To each their own. It's been good the past 4 seasons (knock on wood). chances are if something happens it will be unavoidable.

Yep, I do fog afterward if I'm not going out the next day, usually I only use this boat on weekends. I have a "T" fitting in the accelerator circuit and use that to inject oil for now but plan on installing two nozzles in the air box.

Wonder if 15w40 might not coke the rings in a 200:1 premix? Give it a shot and report back, a new ratio for the less is more crowd will make you an instant star. We used to use 30w at 16:1 all the time, but this was grandpa premix and smoked a little. Could start there and see how far you can stretch it?

I agree with that... Chit def happens. I usually ride every weekend so not much fogging gets done... It's just a good idea if you know ahead of time ur not gonna make it on a weekend to go ahead and fog it.... Like Adam said, only takes a min

Hahahhahahhaha that made me laugh out loud! Thanks Sporster, I needed a good laugh today... Ha! Plus Rotella T is way cheaper than the $45 a gallon for XPS2

Ah Rotella, I shoulda thought of that. So not only is the goal to demonstrate less really can be more but at $45 cut four ways to Sunday and until you get that ratio dialed in, you might even devise a catch can off an exhaust trap to catch the spooge and pour that back in the fuel tank at fillup. :)
