2004 rxp exhaust valves known to fail??

hello all

I just bought an 04 rxp and I ve been reading around to findout what issues are common with this skiis, well i cam accross that in some models the exhaust valves are known to fail, some threads mentioned only 05-06 models others includes the 04, i really dont know what to think, is there any way to check if they are the bad ones or is that something i shouldnt worry about.

Yes you have the problematic valves and they should be changed ASAP as your boat sees salt water. You can remove the cylinder head cover and look at the very tip of the vavle stem you will see numbers etched on the edge (See Pic) if the numbers start 72....... you've got the hollow sodium filled valves, if the number starts 75.... your good to go. If there are no numbers than you have an aftermarket set of vavles ...

You can see the numbers with the cylinder head cover off, use a flashlight and make sure you look on the exhaust side.

Thanks for that input how easy is to remove the cylinder head cover, would I need new gaskets or I could just put everything back together, in case they are the bad ones how hard are these to change, any write up that you are aware of ?

Nope no new gaskets required, there is just a rubber gasket/seal on the cylinder head cover so after you check just tighten the cylinder head cover fasteners down 10-12Nm is plenty. Regarding changing them ... well I would say its an "advanced" level procedure. If your familar with 4 strokes it shouldn't be an issue. If your new to engines or 4 strokes I would contract this one out. That said I would do this sooner than later ... If you look through some of my older threads you'll see the carnage that a dropped valve will do...

alright so following your advice i was able to pulled the cover out and look closely to the valves i checked all of them as i wasn't sure which one were for the exhaust and which ones were the intake, it was kind of frustrating because for more that I looked i couldn't see any number so i didn't know if i was looking at the right thing, after looking at others thread i was able to compare where the numbers are supposed to show and confirm mines doesn't have any numbers, I snapped some pics so you guys could tell me

Unfortunately I can't see any numbers on the valves with those pics. I know it can be a bit difficult to see them with the rockers over them. You'll have to look very carefully for the numbers, the exhuast vavles will be the ones opposite the side of the dipstick (if this helps).

Was actually looking at the forecast and is going to be blowing, I think ill skipped it this time pm your number I will def do something next weekend if my exhaust valves are good, I usually ride with a couple of other ppl so let ke know if you will be interested
