2000 gtx (carb) one beep, wont start

hi Guys,

i have a 2000 model millennium edition gtx and it will not start.

i have bridged the starter relay and cranks over fine.

when i plug in the lanyard i get one long beep and a flash of the red light and screen then turns off.

What is the best way to diagnose from here.

the lanyard post is very worn, is it possible to bypass ie: join wires on the rear to test?

Sounds like the post may be the culprit. One beep usually means wrong key or that it can't recognize the key.

I'd check the connections on the rear ebox also...big culprit is the grey plug that goes in the box isn't making good contact or is dirty.

I'd say these guys are 99.9% right but it won't hurt to get in there and at least do a wiggle test on some of the wiring...the dess post is magnetic and loses it's magnetism over time...replacing the post with a good one may fix this issue.

Usually it is the post, but the fact that it seems to work correctly (does it beep/light up every time you put it on the post correctly??) would lead me to believe the key has "lost its programming" Now, it really cant, as it is just a specific OHM the MPEM stores when programmed, but I can tell you I've reprogrammed said keys and the key worked fine again. My best guess is a little corrosion gets into the key and causes it to have slightly off OHM.

Keys rarely "lose programming" but I had a machine last year in that did.

If you have a spare post I would try it first, but I think in this case it might just be the key.

I was under the impression the key was simply a 8 character hexadeximal code.... the MPEM (ski) stores up to 6 valid codes that will allow the engine to run...

so it's a reverse key

Thanks so much for all this help guys, can I join the wires to bypass it for test purpose or it must be a certain ohm is that's what you mean?

Can I reprogram a new post and key? No dealers down here in Canberra, Australia

Crossing the wires will kit do it. You can buy a CanDoo computer an them don't outmoded keys.

No, there is no work around on the post/key. Get an extra post, plug it in under the steering just to test.

Id go 80% post, 20% key...

Have been doing a lot of reading. Looks as though I will need to take it to a dealer for the key to be programmed. Will be a challenge here nothing for hours

I can program keys all I need is the mpem, but shipping might kill it. I only charge $20 though so it maybe worth it.

Thanks For that offer, i have just remove the MPEM and the complete wiring harness with relay box and gauges, sending this to a dealer here in australia who has a new post and will program for me.

why do you have to remove the gauges?! I'd remove JUST the MPEM.
