Currently engine idles at 1400rpm on the trailer. I have had a few of these carb models and DIs. Isn’t the carb model supposed to idle at 2800-3000 on the trailer not in water? Seems to have a slight mis while at idle as well. How can I tell if the carb is adjusted correctly or which ones low speed jet is clogged

Also it does not seem to be charging the battery and I can’t find the voltage regulator for the life of me.

Is this a new to you jet ski or have you been owning it for a while? Has the ski been sitting idle and if so for how long?

To answer your question about idle I set the idle on carb 951's to no more than 2800 RPM. The engine is prone to runaway so I hedge my bets. If the engine is lean it will start to rev beyond your idle setting and take off. You can pull the key, hit the stop button, and yank the spark plugs wires and it will continue to scream..... pull out the choke and hold it out or stuff a rag into the exhaust, I've heard that holding the throttle wide open will work. To avoid all that, have the ski on the water hose and don't run it too long on the trailer 1 minute max. That is my public service announcement. :)

You can easily get to the engine idle screw to raise idle.
Some Seadoo modles have the regulator inside the MPEM. There is no external regulator. Yours may be one of those. What battery voltage are you getting when the ski is running?

If this is a new to you ski I do a compression test and pull the carbs. Your miss could be something as simple as the spark plugs. Good Luck !

This ski is actually not mine. I took it home for a friend because I have had about 10 of these before. I am familiar with the carbon ring issue and burning it up, but thank you for that because a lot of people do not know. Yes the ski appears to have been sitting a while, maybe a year. How do I lnow
If it has a regularator inside the MPEM. I know my DIs had the same idle speed on trailer and in the water but my last 2000 gtx was carbed and would idle 2x on the trailer and perfect at 1400 in the water. I never rode this so I am not sure if the idle on this is accurate or not. I always thought the carb models would be 2800, hence my question. What can I look for to be sure. I can take some pics. I can’t even see the idle screw with the pipe on. Didn’t want to touch it until I know what I am dealing with and glad I asked the question because I never knew a carb model could be regulated.

Battery voltage appears to NOT be charging. Battery is full charged and voltage doesn’t move at all. 12.62v running or not. I can’t even find the voltage regulator. On all the machines I had it was up front in my XPdi in the fuse box, and in the rear on my last GTX. This one I don’t see it. It’s not on the cover of the electrical box in the rear or inside of it.

Compression is decent. My gauge is a POS so I am not 100% sure. The readings on it are always low by 30 at least. I get about 90 which is low by the gauge but I can test a new engine and get 90 as well. I think the needle sticks on the gauge at 90. Both cylinders have compression and are within each other so I am ruling that out and not going to invest in a new gauge at this time.

The machine starts right up. Idles and never stalls. Runs through the revs, but has a slight shake/stumble idling. This is why I asked if it’s set to low or maybe a carb is plugged and it should be at 2800 on the trailer.

This morning I started it cold after sitting all night. It fired right up with the choke on for a second. Idle came up to 2600 then within 10 seconds came down to 1400 and sat there and idled. Here are some pics.

Well I guess there is no regulator it appears, just the magneto. I will come back to that another time. Out of curiosity before I start messing with the engine is it possible the pump could be dragging due to old bearings and the machine thinking it’s in the water vs on the trailer? Maybe I should pull the pump and try and start it with just the driveshaft hanging out?

Update: pulled each plug wire while idling at 1400, front one dropped idle to 1200, then after reconnecting the front pulled the rear one and stalled the engine. Adjust front idle screw on top of carb 1/4 turn and idled at 2800-3000 perfectly. Starts up and idles 2800-3000 now everytime. Smooth as butter and Revs up like a new chainsaw. Lol.
Still not charging the battery. Decided to forget about the magneto and buff her out
