2000 GTI Spark plug wires

The spark plug boot came off the wire on my 2000 GTI. Is this supposed to happen or does that mean that it is broken and have to replace the wire? I traced the wire to the inside of the electrical box in the rear and it looks like it is connected to the solenoid and cannot be removed and replaced. Do I have to replace the entire contents of the box or can I replace the wires individually?

It's connected to the ignition coil, just cut 1/4" off the end of the wire and reinstall the boot.

Then zip tie the boot to cable. Dielectric grease all electricals. EH!
