2-stroke engines air and water pollution

When I was in Ohio I never once flushed the skis. Moving to Florida was a whole new experience.

When I mean fresh water, I mean the kind you can drink unfiltered from the lake except directly from the tail pipe of a boat... As I was saying, Lake Champlain (unlike Lake Simon) is "not so fresh". As an example, leave your boat in water for a month and it will be stained from micro-organisms. This is why my friend has his on a boat lift all the time (except when he's riding of course...).

No need to wash anything here. But a bit of wax doesn't hurt. After a ride, I usually take a rag, remove a few ounces of water from the hull (from splashing), remove a bit of sand from the turf (the pads) and that is it and if heavy rain is is the forecast, I put the cover on.

Beautiful pic and nice ski by the way. I assume this is salt water.

the tug boats on our rivers I am sure pollute more than the 2 stoke that come out for the few months of summer here. Plus most 4 stroke dump their exhaust in the water also. People just don't like jet ski flying around all crazy. They scare me so I am sure they other skiers and boaters.

How about wake boards? They are the worse. They break the ecosystem with their giant (useless) wake... My beach is just gone, all the sand has left.

I have driven both. The superchared and non supercharged 4-tec. The are like driving a boat you can stand on one side of the ski and it won't even tip over. The 3 seater 13' ones are crazy large. For the price I would just go buy a boat. 15K for a ski I get about any 18-21' foot boat used that I want with low hours. The newer sparks with the lower cost will be the only way to put the 2-strokes in the dust. In Illinois here I bet I see 50/50 ratio 4 stoke boats to 2 stoke boats. So many pontoons yet and older outboard units are like 20+ years old still running.. On the ski's we are looking like 30/70 percent in favor of the 2 stokes here. I am sure it is because we have a like 3-4 month window for skis so people keep the same ones for years. I have had my 97 GP1200 for 7 years. Best $1500 I spent put a topend in it driving ever since. I just picked up 2 96' gtis from the original owner here.

I think the ski's stop at 12 foot. Any longer than they must follow the USCG Boat rules. Both of my ski's are 3-seaters. One is 11 ft 8 inches and the other is 11 ft 10 inches.

12' close enough to 13' those things are huge on the water. A new GTX Limited iS 260 is like 17K that is just crazy for ski. Your payment would be like $400 for 4 years or so. so. I don't even own a car that is 17K. This why no one buys them. I would be scared to scratch it on the water.

Personally I love 2 strokes and will always be riding one. I grew up on 2 stroke seadoos and I wouldn't trade my X4 for anything on the water. I'll still be riding one in 50 years assuming parts are still available. To me there just isn't anything else like it. I don't think pollution is much of an issue. 10 years ago most all PWCs on the water were 2 stroke, and I did not see the lakes turning to dust lol.

I think old Sea-Doo parts will become very difficult to find in 10 years from now and that will be the end of the 2-stroke era.

Did Tahoe ban ALL 2-strokes, or JUST 2-stroke PWCs? Because I've seen that places, and that's bull shit.

With no new 2-strokes being made, they will, year by year, become fewer and fewer...

I like to think my Tesla cancels out some of the smoke from my SEA-DOOs... but who knows.

I burn... what like? 30gallons (2 skis) x 10x a season? 300 gallons... of fuel.

That's nothing compared to the use in a car.

what we need is to swap my Tesla motor into a boat! 360 HP!

honestly I think the GTX or RXP 2016 models are reasonable enough, you have to consider that its no different than a brand new car. Sure it limits who can afford them but so does Lexus and BMW compared to a Kia.

Actually i'm heading to the dealer next week with a friend of a friend that was referred to me for assistance in buying two ski's. I asked him what his budget is and he said "no budget, I want two new ones" I told him that the Cadillac models run 15K and he didn't blink. Now I certainly wouldn't spend 15K per ski, but that's me.

and FWIW my ski is worth more than my truck, but then again my truck was pretty dam cheap, I couldn't imagine spending 15K on a truck, but for me its just a Point A to Point B necessity, I don't need much.

I don't see parts disappearing anytime soon. There is obviously still a huge group of 2 stroke seadoo enthusiasts out there, and as long as there's a market for parts, they'll continue to be made.

Most lakes I think are just banning the 2-stroke ski's since that is what 90% of the people can afford and a lot of people that drive them are asses. Most people won't drop 30K for 2 ski's but they would drop 10K for 2 Sparks. Lets be honest how many people drive a PWC safely? That is main reason why they ban them. They use the environment to help justify it. Where are the reports showing that the 2-stokes are ruining the water ways? How about they stop the factories first than than hit up the 2-stoke people. I see the black smoke pumping out of the tug boats where do you thing that soot land? In the water the shore line.

A few things:

1. Diesel is way worse than gasoline (most likely used in tug boats the way you describe it). Since the VW scandal last month, we are learning that diesel engines pollute way much more than gasoline: particles and NO2 which is much worse than CO. I have been to Paris, France where most of the cars are diesel based (like 70%) and as soon as you land in that city, you have that strong diesel smell up your nose.

2. I am always riding my ski safely. Maybe it has something to do with my older age... But I would say generally that most people here behave correctly except for some young ones who try to go round and round in circles on rented skis...

3. I bought a GTI because I wanted to bring people with me on the water (535 pounds payload) but with the Spark, forget it, barely 400 pounds load. Two medium size adults and you're maxed out. I've seen three teenagers this summer on the lake on a Spark and it kept tilting and the passengers were always falling off. Looks like a "bubble gum" ski...

Oh jeez. Life is too short to worry about this. Engines pollute. If that bothers you, take up kayaking and leave more fossil fuels for those of us that can enjoy them guilt free.

Ha Ha. Doesn't bother me at all. I just think that everyone wish they were "green" but they aren't. I am addicted to my ski. I see it every day, winterized, and each time I see a nice sunny day, I would ride. But Sea-Doo's and ice/frost don't mix...

I own two cars, one ATV and one Sea-Doo and I am longing for a Ski-Doo...

I just wanted to know everyone's thought on that because I found this Lake Tahoe a bit overblown.

All I know is there's never been a better lawn mower than the old two-stroke LAWNBOY models. I still have one to this day and bar none, it outperforms ANY 4 stroke.
My neighbor came back from a two week vacation this summer and we'd had a bunch of rain, his grass was probably 6 inches tall or more. He was trying to mow with his SNAPPER and it kept bogging down and dying. After about the 30th time hearing him have to restart, I took my old LAWNBOY over and it never died once. Pure two-stroke power, baby!

Can't wait to take a take off contest with my friend and his GTX 155 next summer. 85 HP 2-stroke vs 155 HP 4-stroke. I am sure I will lose on speed (because I tried it already) but comparing take-offs will be cool. :)

Read about the modern 2 stroke oil. About 3/4's of it is the additives to make it "clean" for the environment. I opened my bilge drains one time at a lake. Had a little oil in it. An old guy standing there gave me some grief about the discharge, having the "rainbow display" on the lake surface. I told him the additives in the oil will make the oil inert. I told him I pay a lot for the oil to do this!

I just switched to 4-tech Sparks recently and love it. As far as where I like to ride...well, when it comes to jetskis, I don't think I could find a substitute for salt riding. Endless places to roam, WAVES, and sandbars and restaurants on the water everywhere. When it comes to the boat, I like to wakeboard a lot. So, calm freshwater is a premium, especially in my part of FL.

I looked at the Spark before getting my used GTI and one of the issues I had with it was the load capacity and number of riders. The 2UP model has a load capacity of 352 lb and the 3UP of 450 lb. This kind of discouraged me from buying a Spark (and I have yet to be convince that the plastic hull is really good).

To make a long story short, I had a friend and his wife visit me this summer and I was happy to see that we could fit the three of us on my ski that has a maximum load of 535 lb. With the Spark, it would have been impossible to bring them both on my ski (although it was a bit hard to control at near maximum load, we almost tipped a few times but then I learned how to control it).

If you are a lone rider however, I could understand.

But my ski gulps gas by the bucket, how is the Spark doing? How long can you ride on one tank if you do not use it always at WOT?
